Liquid Propane Leak

I was shooting my hybrid for the first time today. it worked a few times and then it messed up. I put the 20 psi in my meter then opened the meter and began pumping air in it to 30 psi. at about 20 psi I noticed that the psi leveled off then slowly fell. I thought it was leaking so I turned off the compressor. I had the meter closed and I noticed the pressure rising. liquid propane was coming through the hose attached to the propane tank. I unplugged the electric bbq lighter. then opened the union to let out the propane.
I thought that there was a leak causing the pressure to drop while I was pumping it up but after thinking about it I think that the coldness of the liquid propane made the air cold causing it to lower the pressure.
I think I shoud have had a valve between the propane tank and the compressor. I think the pressure of the air from the wrong side broke the valve on the propane tank.
any thoughts?
has anyone else had this problem?
