OK, so the aluminum for my new cannon showed up today at my doorstep, and then the reality of the project hit me...I am going to be holding a large hybrid in my hands. I feel nervous about it like I did when I made my combustion gun. I didn't know what to expect.
I figure i'll just start out at regular combustion power and get a feel for the cannon, and then try 2x with nothing in it. Then try a very light weight projectile and move up slowly to build confidence. Anyway, just thought i'd share.

Simple. Remote/shielded test firings until you feel comfortable holding it with your hands. Good luck!

You know what is odd? I have never felt any sense of danger while firing a cannon, even with my old 4" pvc hybrid at 3x in my hands I wasn't really scared.

I think if your not confident in something you build you shouldnt actually shoot it. If you are nervous that its going to give or explode then you probably are doubting that you built it right. And if thats the case, it will probably blow.

I dunno, I don't even feel right holding my simple 1x combustion in my hands most of the time. Some things just don't sit right with certian people I suppose. Anywho, you could just rig up a remote firing system for it. It's better for the first couple of shots anyways just in case you didn't weld something as well as you thought you did.

One thing to remember, you don't have to jump all the way to 2x when hybriding. 1.33 or 1.66X would be easy factors with work with since they would represent basically 5 and 10 psi air. You also get nice little bumps in power even when working with "low grade" hybriding like this so maybe thats an angle that would make you more comfortable.

You will also feel more comfortable if you experiment with it on a mount and remote firing. I think you'll find a mix combination where the gun "feels" right shooting.

Yah when I made my first pop bottle combustion I was scared to fire it. You could do some remote firing to build your confidence before you hold it or operate it within close distances.

Any chance of some pictures when you've got it assembled I've always liked the look of aluminum launchers like the eclipse. Would you consider brushing the aluminum?

On the contrary. Participation in certain forums demonstrates interest in certain topics. Suffice to say that a few years back my organization hired an individual partially based upon my recommendation... And the only way I knew him was through a forum such as this (albeit with a slightly different focus).

IOW, I don't find the idea of hiring somebody from this forum as a joke in any way shape or form. There are some sharp people here. Yeah, there are some real twits too, but hopefully I wouldn't be recommending them.

Not really. Working with energetic materials/systems for long periods of time requires a great amount of respect and a small amount of fear for the systems in question. He's got an "old PVC hybrid" that he doesn't even hesitate to fire? That shows neither fear nor respect. In my line of work, that's the guy who sooner or later ends up with a few missing fingers (if he's lucky).
