CpTn's Mini Hybrid

Hey there! As some of you know i've been working on a mini hybrid lately, and have succeeded. The specifications are as follows:
chamber is 46 cc, 1/2" steel,
1/2" steel union,
Sparkplug epoxied in 3/8" threaded bushing, BBQ piezo.
I'd like to thanks JSR for the fueling tip.
I have tested 2,3,4,5,6 and 8x , the last one being the most powerful. Barrels i have tested are a 6mm 20 cm one, and 8mm 1meter long one. Projectiles? 0.24g airsoft BB's, in both. (saboted in the 8mm one)
Power is without a doubt very impressive, supersonic by a large facter of two for the 8x, saboted airsoft shot.
I shot it at an (almost) solid block of paraffin, about 3" wide and 1,75" deep.
EDIT: Successful 10x shot, with the one meter barrel, and woaw, i saw what "muzzle flash" means... :O I'll try to picture it lol . 2cm penetration in parafin, plastic BB was mushroomed :D and when i tried to remove it, i fell in pieces !

Smallest bottom=> 400 fps airsoft point blank
to the right => 6x , 8mm, 1meter long point blank
up => 8x , 8mm, 1meter long point blank

- 8x shot, 2gram lead sinker at parafin, 1,5" penetration, block exploded, bullet staying in.

Finally we get to see it :) sweet! You chamber volume is almost 3 times bigger than mine...

Have you tried any higher mixes? Check my thread, so far I've got first click ignition up to 10x :D

Those hybrids are quite fun, what's the reload time of your hybrid?

I would like to see one thing though, and that is how much steel you can get a penetrator through. I have shot through 3mm of steel with a "modified" .22lr round. See if you can beat it :P

Other then that I have no more input other then good job!

WTF is going on? Everyone's building hybrids... I am afraid to open the fridge for fear that one'll jump right at me :D
Those hybrids are quite fun, what's the reload time of your hybrid?
That's a fair point - not too many designs have ROF better than 0.5 - 1 RPM

I'm not gonna revolutionize anything on this one!! Rate of fire is very low, one shot per minute maybe.
I'll try a mini-piston-hybrid, when time permits it. A new year in college just began, and it's the most difficult i've had... Third year, so, the year before masters begin.

Getting back on topic, i'll try to shoot the same arrow projectile i shot with the bigger hybrid at some steel, yet, i've already beaten your record ;) take a look at my other hybrid's page. I fired a hole punch through 6mm steel and it pierced it :D

could you show us a picture of your metering system? It seems nice and compacts, but I don't know if it is just external

Well, since there's no point in building pneumatics anymore :P
That's a fair point - not too many designs have ROF better than 0.5 - 1 RPM
Just wait until I get the cartridges sorted out ;)

Take a look at my other hybrid's page.
That was not a mini hybrid :P I mean with this one. You might be amazed what a good projectile can do.

Try some tungsten, welding electrodes work okay. They are very brittle though but still make good penetrators.
Also, when you fire at plates, put some wood behind to get an indication on the energy it had once it have gone through the plate.

I tried a 10x shot this afternoon, the burst disc held the pressure, and my neoprene joint got all burnt. Soda can is very resistant, although it was completely deformed by pressure. gotta find something that is ideal...my union is 1,8cm wide

What were you using for burst disks @ 8x? are you sure they are bursting at peak pressure?

No surprise the soda can didn't burst, those things are tough in a union

I wonder at what pressure will a soda can burst disc made from a south african soda can burst, since our soda cans are made from steel unlike the cans from the USA that are all made from aluminum

How about scoring the disk radially with a blade or scribing tool to weaken it?

I'm using soda can too, but damaging it with a knife in four points and a cross linking the points.

that's what i usualy do, but i tought 10x (1000psi !!!) would rupture without scoring it.

The can i used is steel.


I'm thinking to myself, whether or not i should switch to fibre joints? neoprene tends to slowly burn, whereas fibre joints are used in motor exhausts...

Over a small diameter you'll be surprised how much some materials can take. On my burst disk pneumatic a single layer of ordinary transparent tape was good to 400 psi over a 6mm hole.
