I emailed the guy a while back asking how he made the 'BB minigun' thing that he used in this video

and he was quick to help. Even drew up drawings for me. I'm not going to make mine the same way though.

Not really sure why you would want a computerized turret when you could just put a man in there and do much better. However, it would be really cool to see one working, and would be good to direct your enemies into a certain area. Then again, my first reaction against that thing would be to shoot it as much as possible until it either breaks, or the camera is obscured in paint.

In the real world the benefits of an automated turret cannot be overstated. a sentry capable of administering lethal force at long range with pinpoint accuracy without needing to eat or sleep is an obvious asset. The increased use of unmanned aerial vehicles illustrates another point, not putting personnel at risk is another invaluable benefit.

With the right targeting sensors, a robotic sentry has the potential to be much more consistently accurate out to further ranges than a human operator can.

The Close In Weapons System is a perfect illustration of the application of such a system.

JSR,

Any updates on the Turret project or has the thread been moved elsewhere?

One of the many parallel projects currently on my plate.

First step is an adequate launcher, the idea is for a 3mm autoloader but there are several different paths I'm considering.

One of the more plausible is discussed here, focusing on adding a reciprocating element to a cloud style BBMG to make it more reliable in the context of a detent.

The other side of the spectrum is a pneumatically driven gatling but that's another story :)

Once that is sorted out the plan is to use my machining facilities to fabricate a decent mount that doesn't involve blocks of wood and araldite.

JSR,

Cloud style is cool. But, I think the whole idea is to build an autonomous weapon platform that in my mind should have considerable mission "up time". This means like a sniper, make each shot count. An accurate, moderate rate of fire weapon would be my wish. Course it would still have a ammo in ready capacity of several thousand rounds. The mounts mechanicals were in need of an update. I hope the one you got is a newer unit. Servo city has some really nice mounts you could model from.

It depends on what you want to achieve. I think I've made this comparison in this thread before but here goes:

As I whine about constantly, the constraints of an urban environment mean that i don't have long distances to shoot over to a "sniper" type device is of little use, so for this project I am interested in a compact, fast firing device that can track and engage small fast moving targets with high hit probability, a sort of mini CIWS:

I think what you're imagining is more along the lines of the TRAP:

Don't get me wrong, I would love to build something like the above too ;)

The Sentry Project
Seen it before :D

not bad but I don't like the fact that it's very limited as far as traverse goes

I think it would be good to understand that autonomous turrets and RWS (remote weapon stations) are two different things (though it's not that you can't turn an RWS into an autonomous turret)

now that I have a well paid job I can't decide what would be more fun: an rc plane/FPV setup or spudguns (and possibly a RWS)?

Machine tools.

Machine tools and everything else will follow.

Also, you practically owe this forum a working hybrid ;)

The software I have allows you to manually aim the thing.

I really need to make a decent auto for this.
