the whole stepper motor vs servo discussion is a bit moot
yeah sorry about that... but I think that you'd have to spend that ~70$ on a turret so why not add 30 $ and turn it into something that could be used also at longer ranges or with different guns

something tells me that USGF was on the right track
get a small pan tilt web or security camera. Remove the existing motors. Likely to be miniature stepper motors. Build a small interface board to drive larger stepper motors

These Pan & Tilt setups seems fairly reasonably priced.
It includes servos as well. I would thinks this setup should have enough
torque capability for you purpose. The PT-2 model especially.

It's higher with the servos included, but you don't care about that :P :D

Paycheque due on Friday and I think I know where a fraction of it is going :D

I think I know where a fraction of it is going
hmmm... care to explain ?
but you don't care about that
well even if you will buy them with servos it could be upgraded later... have you considered buying them off ebay ?

I can understand why you prefer to use RC servos... that really is the simplest possible way (but not the best)

just test accuracy at, let say, 20 m or 25 m once you finish it... I wonder how accurate/inaccurate it can be

Here s a cheaper variation.
If you snoop on those robotic sites I posted earlier you will find a lot of potential projects.

I may have to revive my CP-88 mousetrap!

I think that may be more be a matter of the accuracy of the mounted BBMG rather than the servos.

Either way, I don't know what the average resolution or accuracy of a servo is, but even if you're only accurate to the nearest degree, that should be about good enough to hit a man-sized target at 25m.

EDIT: I've done some poking around, and it appears that 0.5 degree resolution is about normal - for a 60 degree servo, at least.

To me, that works out as "good enough".
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

@rag
yeah I know it's not that bad for a man sized target at 20 meters ... sure that's 30 moa... I am sure it will be enough for that purpose...

however, that's not enough if you want to build a turret that can rotate full 360 deg and and achieve 1 MOA accuracy

If I buy the software + controller and pan and tilt module (thanks Duane for the research! I never would have thought of looking for a pre-made one!) and a webcam, which it seems is more than achievable for less than $300 - I'll basically just need to add the gun :D
I think that may be more be a matter of the accuracy of the mounted BBMG rather than the servos.
Rag makes a good point. In my case, I'll be either using this indoors or in the garden, so definitely not more than 10 metres range* so the above setup is more than adequate for my purposes.

*Though if it works I'll try to interest the CEO in having the system installed at work :D

I think you should :D

You can get IR sensitive webcams on ebay for peanuts, with enough IR to flood the room you could have an intruder walk around in the dark while a single red laser follows him around, and all that can be heard above the whirr of the servos is a childish AI voice going "I can see you!" :D

You can take just about ANY cmos, CCD or whatever and use it with IR. I do it all the time. Some are modified by taking out the IR filter, but most of the time you can use a camera with it still in place. It just depends on the intensity of the IR light you use to light up your target. Buy a cheap video camera, used, and you'll be saving yourself a lot of money
