Propane Meter How-To

Mihlrad asked me how to make one so I went into research and made one of my facny ass paint diagrams again, this one took hours....

So here's a How-To... I haven't made it myself, but I know it works because I know how to put fitting together

To Make a Propane Fuel Meter....

-Propane torch head (About $17)
-1/8" NPT - 18 die ( About $7, if you don't have one get a chasing die)
-(2) 1/4" Male to 3/8" barb hose fitting ($1.19 at Home-Depot)
-(2) 5/8" hose clamps (about $0.80 at Home-Depot)
-3/8" Diameter hose ($0.65 on McMaster, 5304K22)
-Regulator with 1/4" NPT inlet\outlet ($10-$20)
-(1) 1/8" to 1/4" female coupling
-(2) 1/4" ball valves ($6.02 on McMaster, 47865K21)
-(2) 1/4" to 1/2" female couplings
-1/2" Inner Diameter meter pipe (only $5.51 for 18" of threaded steel on McMaster, 4499K114)
-1/4" eblow

When tefloning use about 5 wraps, 1 will leak insanely, 3 will still leak, 4-5 is perfect.... DON'T OVERTIGHTEN FITTINGS!!!

that isn't metered check the pvc propane meter how to. it has step by step intructions

Mine is metered.... The one Benny gave isn't...

Mine cost about $80 to make

I think he was talking about the link Benny gave, that one is un-metered, but mine isn't....


I'm hoping to make one of these soon, it'll cost me $25 for fittings, $16 for the ball valves, and $15 for the regulator... I can get the pipe from my uncles because he works at a steel company in Texas and he has a gigantic workshop, I'm going to have to scrounge a propane tank valve from somewhere though....

It only cost about $56 for the main parts and maybe $10 for the meter pipe and $12 for the torch head, if you use McMaster for the Ball Valves, PlumbingSupply.com for the parts (improvise when you buy from here because they have about all fitting possible so you can eliminate some of the nipples by using Street elbows), and Home-Depot for the in-line Huskey Regulator you can make one of these for pretty cheap...
