This is a basic piston valve which can be a chamber-sealing, barrel-sealing, or coaxial. Basically the piston has a rod attached to it, this rod rests against a ball valve when closed, when the ball valve is opened the rod slips through and the piston is allowed to be pushed back by the air.
This has many useful purposes.
One: It elminates the need for an exhaust valve.
Two: The pressure difference is always at it's highest, no delay for the exhaust port to empty so no air resistance, so it always opens at the fastest possible speed.
Three: Any sized ball valve will work, even a 1/4" copper ball valve.

the length of the piston needs to be very very very very presice, or use a spring but the spring needs to be strong enough to hold all the air back, remeber, there is no equalization...

Thats a pretty good idea, I dont see why it would not work. Apart from the sealing factor. Sealing the barrel would be pretty hard. Maybe a compression spring would do the trick?

If you put a bolt through the piston and used the bolt as the rod, the bolt could be screwed in or out to calibrate it. You could put a spring on the rod so you don't have to manually push it back in, you could even spring load the ball valve.
