what about a porto power pump? conect it to a hydraulic cylinder then on the other side of the cylinder have tee with a inlet and outlet check valve pumping fluid into one side would copress the air on the other side. If you try this i would conect the pump to the side of the cylinder that a the rod in it this will reduce the amount of fluid needed to complete a full stroke.

The dead space thing has been brushed on but not analyzed. If the displacement of the cylinder is known and the dead space is known, then the volume of compressed air in the dead space is known. It wouldn't take much to calculate the gas pressure that would expand to the cylinder volume + dead space volume. This will be the pressure that the pump will no longer open the check valve and output more air into the chamber.
