Has anyone tried a reciprocating piston design like this?

On another forum, a member is experimenting with a DIY air tool.

It works something like this:

It seems like it could be adapted to a full auto BB gun. The firing rate might be unacceptably high, but it might be possible to use a heavy piston, longer throw, or springs to slow it down.

One vent could also be used to actuate feeding.

Anyone build anything like this before?

hmm that's interesting... I like its simplicity... does it really work? I mean have you seen a video of it ?

it might be hard to slow it down

uhmm oculd you provide a link to it ?

Of course it would. It's the same basics as a steam locomotive, except that the valve and piston have been combined into one.

Quite a clever simplification actually, if somewhat less elegant in operation and with significantly less control than something like the Walschaerts mechanism.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
