Again, red lasers are too hard to see in the day. If you have to use a laser thats so powerful that you burn a hole through whatever it is your aiming at just to see the dot, then you can lose the spudgun and just use the laser....or GO GREEN!
The laser dewey linked to is available in 20mw versions rather than 5mw and for the same price, so long as you don't live in the US. Thats at least one rule that sucks about the US - weak lasers. I bet 20mw would be SUPER visible during the day since the 5mw version is already easy enough to see.

Do you mean a Red Dot sight? I have no problems with mine in bright sunlight. Plus, even with my crappy eyes I can always see the dot since it's only a couple inches from my eye.

Absolutely I mean a Red Dot sight. Even when turned up to maximum brightness and held just inches from my eye they are Damned Hard To See In Broad Daylight. Now, I'm gonna go way out on a limb here since I've no idea where you live.... But I'm gonna state you don't live in the desert. I've used Red Dots in "greener pastures" and have had no problems with them. But in the extreme lighting conditions of the open desert? Sorry, they are anything but easy to see.

Ditto for red lasers in the desert (at least the ones available 10 years ago when I was tinkering with them... maybe there are more powerful lasers today).

While they government seemingly has legitimate reasons behind the prohibition of these devices, it makes me furious that the asinine fools behind the attacks on aircraft (the initial cause of the prohibition of laser-emitting devices) would so carelessly ruin it for people like me who have a non life-threatening and constructive use for such items. I have indeed looked into laser pointers as an aiming device only to be stopped dead in my tracks by the stupidity and carelessness of some of my own countrymen.

Interesting. I'm in the Midwest so 6 months/year the view it pretty much lush green and 6 mo/year it is winter gray. My Red Dot works OK in both.

Seems to me though that the Red Dot is setup to run the laser at pretty low power (or duty cycle) to get the small capacity battery to last a while. If they would bite the bullet and just use a couple AA (or AAA) batteries I suspect it could be a heck of a lot brighter. (And, the big ass coin battery is pretty expensive and hard to find.)

A red dot that used a 5mW laser at it's full power would be pretty hard not to see at several inches, even if only half the light is sent to the viewers eye.

The problem with using anything more powerful than 5mW on a projected dot sight is the possibility of hurting someones eyes.

Minor nitpick, but red dot sights do not use lasers. They are nothing more exotic than a red LED and a hyperolic lens that reflects a percentage of the LED's light back. As such, they are totally eye safe at virtually any power level.



edit: As for non-eye-safe laser sights... I know that's the manufacturer's liability stance, but its a BS position in my opinion. Why? Cause if you've got that laser in your eye, the laser is the least of your worries. The fact that you're looking down the barrel of a gun should be much higher on your list of worries.
