What to machine...
Hey everyone! Some of you may remember me, I've been a member for over 2 and a half years. (Used to also be a mod) Anyway, I switched hobbies a year or so ago to machining. Now I have a CNC mill, and a manual lathe.
I would like to make a entrance back into spudding. So my question to you is, what to make?
I'd like to stick to typical ABS/ PVC construction for the sake of cost, however I am not so strapped to cost that I can't get adventurous in design. Just in the few hours I thought about it I was thinking maybe a piston valve (duh!), nice barrel supports, etcetera.
So is there any cool ideas you'd like to see get built?
(I'm a bit of a neat/ simple freak, so suggestions even as to refine a operation would be awesome)
Thanks all!

I would like you to think about making some Hybrid Cartridges, as suggested by JSR a while ago.
After you perfect those you could make a "Hybrid Revolver" or similar.
Just my thoughts, btw i am jealous of you cnc milling capabilities
Edit: As suggested with this pic

Welcome back.
What about that secret piston valve of yours that you never posted. The one with the signature pink seal? No one else will have a clue what i'm talking about.
I suggest you look at some of PVC Arsenal's cannons, like 'Fish Killer' and the 'Omega Project' or something like that. PVC always does really clean looking barrel supports.
Oh and maybe a break-barrel? Just a thought.

No, i have no idea, Care to elaborate on the details of said "Secret piston valve"?MrCrowley wrote:Welcome back.

May i ask Pimpmann, what ideas you had in mind?

Just to give you guys a idea of what I'm thinking:
[Pneumatic Cylinder Loader]
-Similar in design to NeoSpud's CylBolt, however the brackets would be aluminum, or plastic. As well the loading is a tad bit different covering the hole for loading with a bored coupler.

*elaboration of "secret piston valve"* Nothing particularly special. All that was different is the sealing face used some pink rubber I'd found. The excitement surrounding it was more out of humor, rather then out of technicality. As far as I know it's functionality is the same as any other rubber. I've built it, but haven't made a chamber for it. Who knows, maybe I was aware of something then that I am not now aware of...

Unrelated to the threads purpose, but whatever. It's a SIEG x2 mill that I put a CNCFusion ballscrew conversion kit on. Then got a Xylotex 4 axis driver board, with 425 oz. motors. (AKA I kissed ~1.5K's ass good bye...)
[MrCrowley]
I'll have to take a peek at his cannons. (PVCArsenal's) Break barrel. Erm... no.
[JSR]
Always been a fan of your concepts; SpudTech through SpudFiles. About the mentioned design. That'd be fun to turn out of metal. Problem may be cost. Your gonna have to obviously dish out money for each schrader. Interesting indeed, this is something I'll have to take a look into.
[Note]
If possible, images make your post and idea a lot more interesting. I'm sure mine and JSR's stood out a bit more. Something I thought I'd say.

- Yellow - 2" Coupler
-----[bored]
Blue - Sleeved GB Barrel
-----[2" sch. 80/ 1.5" SDR-21 (Class 200)]
Green - Aluminum brackets
-----[.75" thick]
Red - Pneumatic Cylinder
-----[2" stroke, ~1.125" body diameter, 5/32" rod diameter]

Would it be possible to have some bits machined (against payment, of course) - I modified the design slightly to reduce the proportion of metal bits needed, in this case i would just need the light grey threaded portion. How much do you think that would cost made from aluminium of brass (whichever's cheapest)?

Odd, some how I managed to miss both Jack's, and Wow's post. Sorry.
Jack-
What dimensions we talking here? The largest tap&die I have is 1/2" NPT. If it requires me to lathe the threads, you might have a problem. My current method of turning threads requires me to leave a ~.5" or so trough for the the lathe to slow. I know there is the alternate means, however as of now that is my only way of turning threads.
Wow-
Not really into "mini" launchers, however making a complete cannon is not out the question. Sort of limited however given cost.

Pimpmann, i use a rather large lathe to turn my threads, i just turn down the rpm, what is the lowest rpm setting on your lathe? Also how big is your lathe?(mine has a 660mm swing and a 2 meter bed.pimpmann22 wrote:Odd, some how I managed to miss both Jack's, and Wow's post. Sorry.

HF 8x12 (pretty damn big lathe you got)
125RPM being the lowest possible setting.
Now I have never had proper training on how to thread with a lathe. When I tested it out I would leave the leadscrew engaged, and simply reverse the carriage back each time (via the motor) Ideally don't you want to disengage the carriage when the threads finish?

ive pretty much stopped building, just cause i got limited by parent, money, and interest. but lately ive had that itch.
i was just asking pimpmann which lathe he would suggest for me, and once i get back to the states, i think im gonna get that, a drillpress/mill, and build a home caster. so this thread is relevant to my interests.
also, pimp, that lathe you suggested clicky, can do up to 7" pieces? am i reading that correctly (not an expert on lathe terms)

There are rules, and then there are hundred dollar bills.
