hey i searched the forums but couldn't find anything about this. my question is if anyone knows what happens when hot glue dries(shrink, expand, harden duh that's obvious) because i'm going to try to cast a breach-like thing and it needs to form a good seal around the barrel. i know it's a stupid question and i would test it myself if i had any spare glue. oh and also will it stay hard or do i have to put it in a frezzer or something??? if someone could tell me that would be great

I dont now if it shirinks or expands but no you do not need to put it in a freezer it will stay hard.

It shrinks a tiny bit, probably in the order of .5%.

ok thankx but do you think it'll still be air tight? i want it to be a sleve around a breach. do you think it would work?

Cooking spray is a good release agent, just give it a go and see if it works, if it doesn't you are only down a couple of glue sticks

ya you're right i mean what's a couple of glue sticks and i didn't cut the breach in my barrel so i really won't lose anything. i thought about cooking spray but i don't have any right now so i was looking for some alternatives.

You get about the same amount as you would from a glue stick. But its around $4-5 too.

Epoxy is rather expensive if you use gallons of it (jsr) but in small quantities it is not that expensive. You could use just about anything as a release agent, vaseline, baby oil, sewing machine oil, motor oil, ky-jelly, snot....
you get the idea, just make sure you only apply a VERY thin layer to the pipe.

Prices for 1 pound of liquid epoxy (the kind you need for casting) can range from $30 - $60 if you buy from McMaster. They also have 25 pound buckets of liquid epoxy for a few hundred, which would likely last for a lifetime of spudding (unless you're JSR ). If you only need a little bit, there are smaller premixed syringes for under ten dollars.

I've never seen liquid epoxy at hardware stores, but that may just be a regional thing. Hot glue doesn't exactly produce good seals, but for a breach on a small, low pressure gun where you don't need the strength (and expense) of metal filled epoxy, it probably won't matter if you do a good job.

ok ty. it's a 1/2 inch barrel and my dad wont let me over 50psi so i think a little leckage won't be to much of a problem but this is my first spud gun so i don't know. i'll try and post pics when i get it to work right and maybe a vidio to but more likly just pics.

Edit: wait so would just hand cream work as a release agent.

Also hot glue tends to have friction with anything rubbing on it and small pieces can come off due to the friction. So i suggest when using the harden, already casted piece, just put some type of grease on it but then it may not seal as good as you want it. But since its for a breech it shouldnt be a problem. Give it a little grease, not alot

50psi... How did that limit get set? Through some convoluted wording on my part, my parents unknowingly agreed to set no power limit on my launchers

As long as the gluing is well done, and not exposed to constant pressure, you won't have any problems.

Hand cream should be fine to use.
