Golf ball backstop?

Ok, so my 2" piston valve golf ball cannon is blowing through anything I put in front of it and sometimes going through a few sheets of plywood then bouncing( only happened once or twice) but I was wondering what you guys used as a backstop, I was thinking a thick like leather tarp but I have no idea where I'd get one. What do you use?

large container full of old carpet/towels etc should work a charm, if you don't have sand of course

I was thinking of getting a thick canvas tarp and just dropping a few eye bolts into the overhang on the side of my shed, and hanging the tarp like that.

If the golf balls are going fast enough they'll penetrate it with ease...

Backstops are one of the most essential parts of a spudgunner's inventory, but also one of the hardest to perfect. My situation uniquely limits me to more innovative designs that don't need one in the first place. Either that, or the shell better be going slow as hell. As some saw in my CA1 video, my stop was pathetic. Even worse was what I DIDN'T tape, which usually was full on penetration.


God I wish I had my own rifle range, that would solve everything.

Ideally, you really need to go with ballistics range ideas here, metal deflectors and sand piles for instance. The energy levels from my trip thunder cannons golfball shots (800-900 ft*lbs) compare favorably to non-magnum handgun levels. If the energy doesn't somehow get absorbed by the backstop, the chances of murderous bounce back is pretty high.

theres this thing they do in airsoft for chronoing guns, where the projectile is pretty much just shot into a peice of paper (or in your case, plywood) then hits a 45* piece of metal, and is deflected into a bucket of bbs, but sand, dirt, even water would do pretty much the same thing.

a thick metal plate with a thick layer of strong fabrics could work.
or make a cool design to deflect them
you could make an whole kind of roller coaster for them with tubes

meta+ golfball sounds like a terrible idea sorry, I was thinking of a hanging thick tarp so when it hits the tarp it has a few feet to be blown back into the shed wall and just drop. Here's a diagram:


It would hit the tarp and have 2 or so feet to blow back and hit the shed and drop. Any intake on this?

my gb gun would go through the tarp and all the way through the shed...

Good rule of thumb, don't shoot at anything you wouldn't shoot at with a firearm.....

my golfball gun would blows through the shed clean, but i figure if i get a thick enough tarp and fold it a few times it'll be fine, or even a leather truck bed cover.

I would try it out before I shot it at "the shed"

There are two kinds of backstop one can use (much like there are two main forms of body armour). Hard and soft backstops.

The aim with a hard backstop is to smash the projectile into oblivion, the aim with a soft one is to catch it.

Golf balls are pretty elastic, so you'll have to use a soft backstop - but your tarp and shed idea... a golf ball at any rate of whack is going to cut through that tarp like a chainsaw through butter, then do the same to your shed.

General rule, if you're concerned about it being damaged, then don't put it behind your backstop!

Alright so I tested it at like 60 PSI,
Its a tarp folded 2 times into a smaller square, then rubber foam, old rug, and packing foam inside works like a charm just don't have enough of it to fill the tarp. The only problem is sometimes it'll blow through all of it and just lightly high the shed and fall down.
