what should i use to lubricate a piston?
Well as long as it doesn't deteriorate I'd use anything, WD-40, soap maybe... I wouldn't use regular grease because it makes a mes...
I have Dow 33 lubricant that one of my paintball gun uses and it's very very good lubricant, it's thickened lithium soap that works from like -180 to 400 farenheit (sp?)
Try to find automotive lubricants because they normally are tough...

What type of O-rings are you using?
...but petroleum jelly is probably a good bet.

Permatex Anti-sieze, is great for hot or cold, very slippery. Can be bought at any auto part store. Just not good in bearings or any other prolonged high speed applacations.

Drac, there's no such thing as "normal rubber".
Most O-rings are buna-n (aka nitrile), which is:
Nitrile Is Recommended for:
* General purpose sealing.
* Petroleum oils and fluids.
* Cold Water.
* Silicone greases and oils
* Di-ester base lubricants (MIL-L-7808).
* Ethylene glycol base fluids (Hydrolubes)
Nitrile is not recommended for:
* Halogenated hydrocarbons (carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene)
* Nitro hydrocarbons (nitrobenzene, aniline)
* Phosphate ester hydraulic fluids (Skydrol, Fyrquel, Pydraul).
* Ketones (MEK, acetone)
* Strong Acids Ozone
* Automotive brake fluid.
As to the origional poster's question, he can use just about anything. I'd not reccomend ky jelly, though, as it's water based and will dry out. Again, vasaline or other grease is probably one of the better options.
