Wtf is joels thunderpipe anyway?

I been wondering wtf this thing is for a long time now, he calls it the thunderpipe...
http://spudtech.com/detail.asp?id=55 the video is just a massive fireball that mushroom clouds the sky for a few seconds... is this all it does i dont understand it.

I think Joel said it was a bit of kerosene in the barrel.

It's just a standard pnumatic. If one puts kerosene in the barrel and lights the top, when it is shot the liquid all catches on fire at the same time.
I have done this with my copper piston cannon.
