Merits are for everyone to put in their signature. They can show how far you've come as a spudder. They can also make a challenge, you could even try for them all!
You can discuss whether you've earned one in the comments of your showcased cannon.
All of these should be proven in the showcase.

Plywood Puncher- Shot through a 1/2 inch of plywood
Going the Distance- Shot over 1/4 mile
Touchdown- Shot over 1/2 mile
Sound Breaker- Shot over mach 1
Here Comes the Boom- Shot over mach 2

Although your intentions are good, this seems like another one of those ideas which is going to fizzle out and amount to very little. The community is small enough that such designations are hardly necessary, and unlikely to be used.
Also, while any of these individually would be relatively simple, it occurs to me that a 7" bore 600+m/s hybrid with select-fire capabilities from bolt action to full-auto would be mighty awesome

Well, me and some others think it'll be cool. Maybe it will fizzle out... Hopefully not. To keep this from fizzling out i planned to add new ones as time passes.

You could do it as a badge under your avatar. That'd be neat. have the pics of each merit underneath your "rank". It could work. It may mean a little more work for our moderators/computer-savvies, though. We couldn't have just anyone putting checks by badge names.
chinnerz plays games, and one part of playing games for me is belonging to a clan, i have helped build 2 websites and for one of them we ended up doing something very similar to this.... within 2 weeks nobody cared about it any more... srsly wasn’t worth the effort.
However we did use the ranks, and we also ended up changing the stars to different medals if you are planning on doing this i recon that was the easiest way to do it.

Add a "point" to someones ranking when you feel they deserve it. Rankings would then have actual meaning (hopefully) directly relating to experience/knowledge level.
Might put a stop to the occasional "post whore" trying to run up a ranking as well.
