Yeah, whenever I buy mine it's always in person. I would never buy lengths of pipe over the net.

PVC isn't so popular in europe as it is in US.. AFAIK BtB had some problems with getting pressure rated PVC... I don't use PVC but it is available here (but almost not used at all) and it isn't very expensive. but hey why would I use PVC if I can get some cheap steel and all the fittings ?

The great thing about using steel pipes and malleable iron fittings is the fact that once you buy one you can use it to build one gun, then scrap it and use it again to build another gun. So in other words after several months you can have a nice collection of fittings valves etc.

on the other hand I admitt that fittings are rather pricey in larger sizes (2.5" and bigger)

I've never had one problem with this myself.

More often, I find that my local B&Q and Homebase stores carry nothing but abused pipe I wouldn't buy - the pipe I've ordered across the net has never been anything but flawless.

Although this is probably the lamest idea to avoid money problems, I find that limiting my armory itself works well. I'm busy enough as it is, and spudding is a bit expensive for my stingy budget. Instead of building cannons, I personally spend about two months of designing and thinking before I buy one piece. This allows me to build a gun efficiently and allows my budget to recover. Also, building small guns is obviously quite cheaper than larger ones.

Try seducing a wealthy business man and getting him to put you in his will...then when he least expects it..BAM the old fork in the eye...

When I was 15 I got a job as a labourer, just stacking heavy stuff driving forklifts, painting etc... at first I was on minimum wage like 500 bucks a week, but then after I proved I could cut it with the big boys I got put onto the adult wage which turned out about 1700 bucks a week for 12hour days...You gotta start small man and work your way up

@watto: Ah, you've reminded me of when I did a search for one of my old(er) signatures on Google - most hits related to me, but a hit came up which rather surprised me... it seems that a certain person was using it on a marijuana advice site.

Yes, you can spend alot more on other hobbys, but spudding is expensive if you don't live in America/Canada.
Spudding does not have to be expensive, even for people who don't live in the USA/Canada. Sure, parts may cost more in New Zealand and Australia, but what is wrong with ordering fittings and valves from United States based suppliers, and having the parts sent in a USPS international flat rate box for a price that is reasonable and constant throughout the world? Then, you only have to pay large amounts for lengths of PVC pipe, which shouldn't be too crippling.
I tried that with sgort87, I saved like $3NZD. Shipping was $28US for about 8 2" fittings. And don't even get me started with lengths of pipe.

I couldn't say I know anyone that's into REC, so compared to everyone around here, Spudding is expensive. We don't exactly have dirtbikes and whatnot where I live. Come to think of it, i'm not sure many people have a hobby, they just play sport.

There's a limit to how much you can get for free, my first cannon was made out of pipe I found outside a house for example. I've never had another opportunity like that again.

And copper is cheaper and other metal pipe and fittings is cheaper over there then here, that's why Canadian spudders make a lot of high pressure metal cannons. Here I don't have that choice.

I can't even get high pressure without making a pump, getting CO2 is far too expensive.

Yes, but we're not talking about Nitro Cars, we're talking about spudding.

I think the way that lots of people see it when they say that spudding is expensive is that they know that they probably shouldn't be spending all that money on a device that fires garden vegetables. That's the way I see it when I say that spudding is too expensive. Well, that and the fact that it costs a ridiculous amount of money.

SpudBlaster, you may be willing to spend an outrageous amount of money a launcher, but there are lots of people who would prefer to keep costs to a minimum, and sometimes it's just not worth it.

Given the choice between spending £200 on spudding and putting £200 in the bank, the bank would win.

Seriously though, good for you, you're one of the lucky souls who has enough money to spend on whatever they want. The same cannot be said for the vast majority of people.

You need to distinguish though, between casual spudding and something more dedicated. I'm just casual, I really have little time between my job which nearly consumes my life and my wife, who consumes the other half :) But it's fun making smaller, simpler launchers and checking having fun with the fruits of my labor shooting nerf footballs in the air for our friends to catch -- we have a blast with these things.

And if you stay casual budget-wise, it can be very rewarding. But really, it's all in what you get out of it based on spendin money you're willing to give up. Fortunately for me, that's not a high amount. :) If your enjoyment requires spending a lot of money in this hobby, then maybe you're right.
