sprikler pressure test

looks like more launchers could make use of a sprikler now. that is higher pressure/power ones

what you guys think?

I think this is an excellent find (I would ). Thanks for this and I'll go through it thoroughly and see if any of the data can be put into an update of The Sprinkler Valve.

HOWEVER, the biggest problem I see is that the tester used only liquid for a short period. I'm almost certain that gas pressures would be far less. Still, this is nice to know.

This biggest problem I find with sprinkler valves and high power cannons is the 2 90 degree bends and the 180 degree bend in the flow through a straight inline valve. COEF when open just isn't that great. I have had the opportunity to compare my 1 inch coaxial cannon valve with a 1-1/2 inch sprinkler valve in shirt launchers.

The 1 inch QDV tosses shirts 200 feet while the 1-1/2 inch sprinkler valve is good for 60 feet. The performance is that striking.

The QDV tosses shirts into the back of the stands at the Hillsboro Stadium from the center of the football field.

Into the stands and almost put one on the roof. Oops, deleted the original post photo. Will re post the pic next week.

I was expecting good performance, but I didn't expect to beat a 1.5 inch valve by that much.

i know that the flow and opening speed arent great but it would be a cheeper option to a commercial qev

Even when a valve would survive it to hold and release 400 psi gas pressure, note that it may not keep doing that forever.
If it survives the first few shots, it may fail next time.

well i know that it wouldnt preform as good as a qev, but for people who want more power than a ballvalve, dont have the knowhow to make a piston vavle and have say 200~250psi it would be a good option.

and i would not feel safe with one at 400psi, expesily with a gass

I get nervous with the sprinkler valve at over 125 psi!!!
Lately, I wear glasses, safety glasses, work gloves, and sometimes use ceremonial denim over launcher while filling. (well, when using propane to fill on a hot day out).

In the test a solenoid pilot was used, so slower opening speed, besides the water moving slower than air/gas which probably has less "shock" effect on it too.

My 3/4 toro valve was thick but very brittle plastic, almost like fiberglass or ceramic feel.

The 1" Lawn Genie's I use make me nervous because they're so thin compared to the PVC,
which BTW, over 1" is not rated for higher than 400PSI IIRC and a projectile could become lodged making the rating important IMO.
Besides most of my designs put the valve right next to my face to make things worse.

I never had one fail in nearly a thousand launches...But I'll let someone else test them at over 150PSI!!!

They are what they are, My too lazy to build a piston/ would rather work on my metal bodied piston...
For moar power from them, I use heavier longer projectiles with wadding or sabot, longer barrel,
or stick to shooting spuds, apples, mushy shooting bananas, oranges have been fun, blue painter tape layers burst-disc on breech for noise etc.

BTW, other day I finally blew the crap out of the cherub statue!!!
One sprinklered valved 1.5" barrel apple vaporised him for good!
Hence part of my new sig hit me (other part from deer hunting in mtn.s with an AK)... 8)
