Just a simple challenge I came up with, no prizes involved other than bragging rights.

This afternoon, I launched a 0.12g airsoft round at a Canadian dime (92% steel, 5.5% copper, 2.5% nickel, 1.22mm thick). Predictably, it didn't go through. It did, however, leave an impressive dent (considering the projectile).

So, here's the challenge: shoot your own airsoft gun, be it commercial or homemade, at a Canadian dime, or some roughly equivalent coin. No restriction on the mass of the round you use, so long as it's plastic, 6mm, and spherical. It would be interesting to see at what speed the coin starts bending.

Also, I personally guarantee a donation of $50 to anyone who actually manages to launch an airsoft round through a dime

I really couldn't say what the muzzle speed is, as I was using a new propellant configuration that I haven't tried before. I can say that there is 1" of wood between me and the launcher, and that, at these speeds, bouncing is not an issue - the round either punches through, and shatters into tiny pieces, or fails to punch through, and shatters into tiny pieces.

Of course it does. Just don't tell us how you did it.

HOLY CHRIST! That dime doesn't HAVE a dent. It IS a dent! That's quite possibly the most impressive damage I've ever seen (relative to projectile size of course).

*shakes hand*

It's amazing the BB didn't go all the way through with a crater like that. I might put a pic up when I finish my project. Should only be a day or two now...

I dont think you can even shoot through a dime with a .22lr, so i dont think you could do it with an airsoft gun.

that was most definitely not an ETG. Unless DYI changed his bank since i saw it on 4hv, 400 joules input will not do that.
I say ETC....or C.

Well then, it clearly wasn't going fast enough.

(Actually, I think the problem is more lack of mass and excess of velocity. Heavier BBs would likely help)
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
