I have to join the discussion to point out that the simplest air engine can be built with an air cylinder and a 3 way valveIt's the same principal as my engine, only with three cylinder assemblies

ohh btw now that you have a lathe you can build your own DCV valve... get a block of aluminium, drill a hole all the way through it then 3 perpendicular holes for ports and finally turn a spoolI can see it
