Jack I've had a few different versions of those and they were all junk. When it comes to video recorders you get what you pay for! My friend Willard got a JVC last summer, paid all most 300 for it and it's worth every penny.

I'd set my minimum at 250 at the least, anything in that range is going to be a better brand and quality built. Anything else is a waste of time and money IMO.

Yeah, figures. Got to try a genuine gopro when in Siberia (careening down a riverbank on a child's toboggan of good old Soviet manufacture :D) and they really are brilliant, I can't imagine the Chinese stuff matching up in this case.

You can see the differences in HD here:

Having a higher frame rate helps any DVR. The DVR's I've had were all 30 fps. I wish the maker of that video would have taken both videos at the same time...

Nothing wrong with Chinese production in my view, the question is quality control.

You can make 100 units, 50 are perfect, 25 are so-so and another 25 are total loss. It cost you 1 euro each to make them.

If you sell the perfect ones at 2 euro each, you make 50 euro profit.

However you can sell the perfect and so-so ones for 1.34 each and still make the same profit.

Branded goods are usually the first option. Not strictly applicable to the Gopro but to many "generics" out there.

That's more less what I wanted to point out - though they probably earn less per day than some of us in an hour

...so I wouldn't be surprised if production costs were less than 25% of the final price

Defintiely, anyone in manufacturing will tell you.

A quality control department for example is expensive to set up and maintain, and contributes nothing to actual production - but you have to heap it on as one of the costs because otherwise you cannot guarantee consistent quality to your customers.

well I included quality control in production costs ;-)

Can't say I am surprised that most companies moved their factories to china :?
