Oh forgot to add -
If the stars, planets and tree's all align correctly I may get another shooting session in within the next few weeks. We will have a special target this time. Not telling what it is, but here's a hint (this is a photo of one like it - our's has steelys and no windows left lol)
I also want some idea's for targets. I'm getting tired of microwaves and food. I have the idea for the 2L bottle filled with liquid hydrocarbons and road flares accidentally placed nearby - but I want others! I keep forgetting to do "power demonstration" shots i.e. how many layers of plywood...
idea's PLEASE!

How about some alternative ammunition
3/8" ball bearing buckshot for example...
Shame about the calibre, I would have offered some machined rounds and sabots. As it is anything above 1.5 inches diameter is possible but inconvenient.

Ahh good idea with the buck shot - that will look rather interesting on the vehicle.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:How about some alternative ammunition

I found a good deal on 100 1/2" bulk steel bearings that I just got on the 'Bay. I can make 3 or 4 buckshot rounds (I made a prototype shot shell "wad" and it holds 21 1/2" balls). I'll have some left over for the mighty mini cannon then!
Early HGDT estimates at 10X conditions give me a velocity of 1092 - more than fast enough to pass through sheet metal
I just reran a HGDT simulation of my 8X ceramic ball tests... 1071fps... that's scarily accurate (I chrono'd 2 shots right at 1070fps)
I really want to finish my APFSDS round I will be doing some welding the rest of this week so perhaps I can toss it in the mix. What does everyone think of the tip? attempt to harden it via flame and/or oil - or just sacrifice some old drill bits? Need a Sabot system too... oi vai Hopefully a disc/cylinder with a push rod/holder will work sufficiently (dart shaft will be constructed of steel tubing)!

Well after welding all sorts of items for Xmas gifts, I decided to make myself some.
3 different sized darts - all with solid steel tips fully fused to a hollow shaft with sacrificial fins (I made 2 sets for each projectile in the rare chance I get to re-use one of them )
Can't honestly say that I did a CP to CG comparison to make sure they are super stable - but I won't be shooting them too far. I plan to use golf balls cut in half and screw on a retaining bushing to them that inserts about 1/2" into the rear of each arrow for the rear portion of the sabot. Not sure what to do for the front yet unless I can use the fins to take car of the centering...? hmm
Either way - I finally have some nice darts, I'm going to oil quench the tips soon with my O2/Ac setup and a pot of used motor oil wish me luck!

*fap fap fap*
How about three small radial bolts at the front to take care of centering?
can't wait to see these in action

JSR - not sure what a "radial bolt" is to be honest - mind doing what you do best and posting a link?
Well I went through with the oil quenching today - it went pretty smoothly until I got to the monster dart!
The first two darts (small and medium) after the quenching process:
The setup:
The flame heating:
Getting it cherry red:
Quenching!
Oops!
(the oil got so hot from absorbing heat from my massive dart - that it caught fire, well I had a lot on my hand at the moment so I kept cooling the dart thinking the fire was temporary like the first two - it wasn't! After about a minute, the bucket caught fire, and with my boy scout knowledge in hand - I knew not to throw water on that shit lol. I looked around for any loose dirt like material, but lo and behold it's winter here and all that dirt is frozen! I finally found some peat moss and through it on the oil fire, but not before it had burned the walls of the container down and created a mini superfund site in my backyard! For those that don't like superfund sites in their backyard - I'm with you... I scooped about an inch of dirt from the whole site, which captured all the oil thankfully and put it in a trash bag.)
Now my arsenal consists of the following projectiles (with weights!)

Some engine block penetration would be nice.
EDIT - and I used to live a few blocks from a superfund site, although it was mainly creosote and not oil.

EDIT2 -
In 1915, the creosote plant burned to the ground, killing 55 workers and 3 firefighters. The plant was rebuilt on Bayou Lane, closer to a water source and closer to a fire station. Eventually, creosote polluted the bayou which was a source of drinking water for many of Slidell's residents. The creosote plant was abandoned in 1986 and became an EPA Superfund site. The canal was dredged and waste incinerated until completion of the cleanup in 1996. At that time a boat launch was built and Heritage Park was constructed on the former site.

I mean screw a couple of bolts into the front to act as supports to keep it centred, with the same orientation as the fins.mobile chernobyl wrote:JSR - not sure what a "radial bolt" is to be honest - mind doing what you do best and posting a link?
Another option is something like this if you have a lathe handy:
Worked well for an arrow inthis.

LeMaudit has kindly conceded me some time to make a 4" PVC pneumatic just to get it out of my system before concentrating on more commercially viable paintball/airsoft projects
