Any diaphragm/piston valve that is 1" or over should work just fine.

Call it a stupid question, but if the gun is supposed to be automatic why do you use a sprinkler valve? It would seem that the sprinkler valve is just restricting airflow. Wouldn't a ball valve have been a better choice.Since the gun runs like a cloud BB gun, I would think that a maximized airflow would increase velocity and cycling rate.

I'm also thinking of making one of these, but a small one to shoot marbles/paintballs. How many do you think it would shoot if it had, lets say a foot and a half of 3" PVC as the chamber and a 1" modified sprinkler? I'll build it, definitely, and maybe make the barrel detachable, so I can try different mag lengths.

No.
A ball valve, could work for these purposes, but it all happens so quickly a ball valve wouldn't open quick enough.
