Is there a practical reason for having them there or is just to scare the living daylights out of people before you shoot something that would scare whatever is left to be scared out of them?

I added them because I could, and because it was cool/ signals people to clear the shooting range.
I have been asked by a bunch of people to take and post a video of this.
