hydrogen powered mini

Boom! The classic potato gun harnesses the combustion of flammable vapor.

is this a decent first mini spud for a 13 year old?

great job!

@ iemand i used a flyback from a small, old crt television, can't recall the brand.

for schematics check out http://www.angelfire.com/80s/sixmhz/flyback.html

i am using 2 2N3055's in parallel on a big heatsink, but that was because i intended to (and did) use it for hv experiments, where i ran it off of a old 18v 3.7 amp laptop adapter

but now, for ignition purposes, i use a 5v 1amp wall transformer

@rp181 for the ne555, no,see above

and for the t, good idea, i will see if i can add one, although i am a bit busy working on a pneumatic .22 pellet rifle

it is a electrolyser ripped out of a (€40)estes hydrogen rocket kit
housed in a jam jar
powered by a (€50)10 amp battery charger
where in tap water it draws about 5 amps where it generates 2 cc/s, i add potassium hydroxide(€14/kg) or sodium hydroxide(lye,€4/kg) if i want more amps=faster production

if any1 wants more details/tutorial about the gun/electrolyser/flyback transformer, just ask
I Happen to have one of those said rockets... And I'm getting awfully bored with it......

what are you waiting for?
shall i post a diagram of how to disassemble the rocket/assemble the cell?

awesome gun!!!

I've been planing to build a electrolysis powered airsoft gun but I have no idea how big to make the combustion chamber and barrel to get the desired fps. Any information about the size of your chamber and barrel and the amount of H2 O2 that you use would be greatly appreciated. And if possible the velocity with a given projectile weight would also be nice.

The information you've already given me has been lots of help. thanks

Insane build  . It makes me want to attempt to build one. hmm

I find it hard to believe you are only 13 years old and constructed that; especially with your attention to detail and advanced terminology. In any event, it's a great job! Keep it up!

Cheers!

Hey, I'm only 13! Age doesn't necessarily determine your intelligence, as is demonstrated above.

Great mini! I take it that you're into electronics as well?

@ sianiac whoa you certainly are interested

but here is the data i have so far
the camber is 10 cc
the barrel is aluminium 8mmOD and a 5.5mmID
i use ready-mixed hydroxy from the electrolyser
in this case, more is better, because you will always have too much O2 from the air in the chamber
so to be safe i always put in >12 cc of hydroxy

i don't have a chronograph(is that right?) so i can't measure any speed.
got me some .22 airgun pellets, they are a really tight fit and because of that don't go far
the only thing that fits in the barrel are cotton swabs, and they go through 2 sheets of 80g/m2 paper

i wish i had an airsoft barrel :( , please if you have any tips on how to get them, or make them, you would help a lot

@roboman

thanks :D

now i am into spudguns
and yes i used to be into electronics(still a little but i'm kinda bored of it)
and before that i was into chemistry, i gave it up because of a "little" accident  , that made me a bit more careful
but i still have some fun stuff left(lycopodium, ammonium nitrate, ammonium dichromate, hexamethylene, etc)

I've heard 6mm brakeline works fine for airsoft barrels.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

I use 6.1 mm ID brass tube from McMaster-Carr but the pieces are a bit short and is kinda expensive. I would much rather use brake line if it's a good ID. If it's used in the states on foreign cars than I can probably get it for free.

That information has helped a lot. I think I'm now going to attempt a prototype.

Is that a 12 volt battery charger you're using on the electrolosys cell?

This is something i could use the electrolysis thingy out of my hydrogen car for. Score, cause the car itself stinks anyway.

So, that's a yes.
Just wanted to make sure, who knows what kinda of batteries you could be charging. I plan on using 18v power tool batteries to power mine. I'm going to test how fast a q-tip has to be going to penetrate paper like you described, then I'll shoot an airsoft BB at the same pressure and check it's velocity. I'm guessing you cut the one of the cotton bits of your q-tips.

great mini. ive tried to make something like this before but could never get the electrolyzer to produce enough H2 to make it powerful. i have also moved on from chemistry after a slightly dangerous attempt at making explosives(nearly blew up my kitchen) and now i stick to potassium nitrate smoke bombs :D
