So the nail drops off with the sabot?

that part breaks off first and hits the target then the bbs hit.

Either the BBs will hit first because they have less drag, or they will not even hit the target because they will have spread so much because of their flight path being blocked by a slow moving board (your nail thing.)
I don't see the point of this... Could you explain?

Uhh...w/ more drag, your sabot is less effective.

Apparantly your diagram shows that w/ more drag the front part will fall off.
Wrong answer =/.

With more drag, it'll stay attatched to the sabot, and instead the sabot would lose a significant amount of speed.

Sabot concept=useless

If your front sabot piece was to be sharp and could accelerate faster and break apart as soon as it left the barrel, than it could work.

Frontal piece could be in 2 pieces which break from the side to allow the ammo inside continue on.

Nail isn't necessary, a small tiny weight in the front will be sufficient enough.

putting the fishing weight on the back lowers the CG and will cause it to be less stable.

the fishing weight is in the front

It probably will work better with the front sabot being 2 pieces

edit: also with the holes in the back piece more air will push the front causing it to accelerate faster, maybe :?:

Worth a try, if it doesn't work well you have room for improvement. Sabots are traditionally in the rear with the projectile in the front, you probably know that. You never know until you try.

I am not trying to be rude or offend you but it doesn't make much sense at all... it won't be ultimate ammo it will be ultimately lame ammo... it won't fly to far, it won't be accurate and it won't be effective at destroying whatever you want to shoot it at

if you want an ultimate ammo either use steel or lead BBs (or small nails) to make a kind of shotgun shell or use a sabot to fire one bigger nail (add some fins to make sure it would be stable in air)

Personally, I think its a waste of time. You can take a hole saw, cut out a piece of material such as wood to fit inside your barrel, dropo that down, fill with BB's, and then put another piece of material on top to prevent roll-out. Its that easy, its that cheesy, Papa John's! ( for all of you who have no clue what i just said, papa johns used that slogan in an advertisement describing how they make their pizza's)

In this case, i can only suggest that the creator is looking for something like a airsoft m203 type of shell.

The only problem with it is acceleration and drag.
But i dont see how the bb's will be able to fly past the weight in the front?

Hey, nice to see you as a moderator jrrdw. Lentimentalisk, your right, Dihydrogen Monoxide is just to dangerous to keep around. It only improves athletic performance like steroids! :D

On topic again... How is this going to be better than a regular sabot? I guess I could see it being effective if it was two halves of a cylinder with a pointed end as OuchProgramme was saying. Maybe a cup shape at the end of the tip to split it in half in flight. The only way i could see this being better than a normal sabot is that it would have tighter grouping. However this can easily be fixed with a removable choke or a longer barrel. An shotgun M203 round, if it exists could make use of such a design because the barrel is extremely short. But other than that, what would you want it for?

There is a shotgun round for the m203.
It shoots 40 buckshot balls.
the other ammo for the m203 are armor piercing, anti personnel, Incediary, and parachute flare. Each single round wieghs about one pound total. The shotgun round would be my personel favorite.

As far as this ammo design, it doesn't look very thought out.
If you want the desired effect maybe the bb's should be in front of the piece with the nail in it and have a break away section there.
The lead weight should be mounted closer to the plastic piece.

How it is in the picture the propelling gas would go around the bb's and not propel them very well. 8)

Ammosmoke: How do you suggest one makes a choke? From what I have read the standard shotgun choke is in the hundreds of micrometers, which is faaaaar beyond our accuracy range, and probably wouldn't do much at the consistency of our cannons. Any and all suggestions welcome.
