The standard pins on automotive relays are labelled on the relay body as;

  1. Pin 85 and 86 are the coil leads.
  2. pin 87a is the NC (normally closed) contact.
  3. pin 87 is the NO (normally open) contact.
  4. pin 30 is the Common contact for 87 and 87a.

When the coil is off 87a is connected internally to 30. When the coil is on 87 is connected to 30 (and 87a is disconnected).

Note that the pin label locations in the image below do not match those in the schematic above.
