I can't cut SS but more info is needed. 1 piece or 2? If 2, how to join them? M2 taper just on the top side? How long do you want the taper? Is the taper piece flat or round? If flat, how wide? The piece perpendicular to the taper, how wide?
Are you supplying the SS? Or is the person making the part getting it for you? The more details the better my friend....You want the part to be right the 1st time so there will be no need to re-make it a 2nd time. :bigsmurf:

Preferentially in 1 piece, MT2 taper for MT2 lathe tail stock... LOL round of course, you should have got that by the axial line... I accept two piece also, if both of then have a female M10 threads so I can thread them with a M10 screw.
I'm not making this by myself because I don't have ss bar of such size, so who ever takes this job need to have it.

Wyz, try and find an MT2 drill bit and cut the shank off, then thread it on the lathe and screw it to the plate, if you were to have that machined out of a solid billet of stainless it would cost you hundreds.
Where's my Chuck key?

Holding it on lathe chuck would be a pita plus threading it. But perhaps make it two parts does save trouble and reduce cost, it's up to whoever accept this job.

I assume this is intended to be tooling for a smaller lathe. What is the intended purpose?
Why stainless?

Like the others said, depending on it's intended purpose,
Make it from two parts;

Then shrink fit, or key, your face plate, to it.

I want it to fit a lathe chuck on the tail stock as a universal tap/die holder. I'd prefer tool steel but that's too hard to machine. Any steel will do but stainless doesn't rust

Why the taper when you can have something held in your drill chuck?
Say something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Inline-Greenfie ... 3cdcdc9a4b

I thought about that Jack, but my drill chuck only accept 13mm dia max, a MT2 taper to fit directly to the tail stock is stronger

Machine (or have machined) to fit this;

Have the two tig welded together. Takes most of the labor out of the job, which should reduce total cost. Might be able to source those parts on your side of the pond to reduce shipping costs as well.

Thanks everyone for the input, anyway I managed to make it myself (perks of having machines, you can make your own tool)
Aluminium face plate (can't find same size in steel) and SS shank. Didn't have SS in hand big enough to make it MT2 taper, shame that I need the drill chuck to hold it, but it work so...

I have a simple job for anyone interested: doing this to a 1.5" union.
Maxing out a steel hybrid at 4x just seems wrong, I need a union that can hold higher pressure!

L0L the shipping will cost more then the machining time but I'd be happy to do it for you....Shipping back and forth to Maryland will be around 12 dollars round trip + 10 for set up and resurfacing the sealing faces. PM me if interested, you might be able to find someone closer and save a few bucks on shipping.
