modifying 2" sprinkler valve

I posted a topic awhile back about a 2" sprinkler valve and I just received it in the mail. It doesn't have a solenoid so I have to mod it. In the center where you normally drill the hole is some kind of rod that unscrews. I think it's called a guide rod. Do I leave this alone or take it out? Where should I drill the hole and what should I pilot it with?

surely you could use the empty solenoid hole for the pilot?

Do you know the model number of this valve? The thing in the center may be a flow control knob. A look on the Hunter website should tell you.
Any chance this was purchased off eBay? I saw a few of these a couple weeks back with the solenoid removed.

You should drill the hole in the "bonnet", where the flow-control handle was removed.
I have no idea what diameter the hole is, but usually, they are larger than a 1/4"NPT. You may have to drill and tap the hole for a 3/8"NPT thread.
Here's a link to this valve : <a href="

daberno123: The model number is #ICV-201G. I think it is a flow control knob, but what is its purpose? Yes it was purchased of ebay for $48 including shipping.
DR: I looked at the picture but I still don't fully understand. Is the bonnet the place were the solenoid goes or in the center were the knob is?

The flow control knob is something that is used on the valve with water to adjust how much water is able to pass through the valve when it is opened.
Regarding your question about the bonnet, I think DR is talking about where the knob was.

So I should take the knob and rod off drill and drill the hole there? If I did that I would have to cut this thing sticking up off.

I've looked at two other 2" sprinkler valve cannons and it seems like both of them drilled through the center and put the pilot there. They both used ball valves to pilot but you couldn't go wrong with a small QEV. I doubt a blowgun will be sufficient though.
Just for reference here are the other two guns I found using 2" sprinklers on them:

I have one like that but 1.5". Remove the spring. The guide rod goes down into a cylinder through the diaphragm. That perforated cylinder controls the leak to the top of the diaphragm. I put some epoxy putty there to control the flow. When the guide rod is removed, the threaded thing can be used as the pilot hole.

i modded the same valve by just tapping in a 1/4" pipe nipple to where the flow control was
