Piston Cannon Design-I Want Your Ideas
So I have a bit of time on my hands and want to make another coax piston gun. So, I'm gonna leave it up to everyone on the forum to come up with some good ideas for me And what you want to see. If you have a great design that you want made but don't have the time then here's your chance. This cannon can be any size and made from the smallest materials up to 4" PVC, I'm leaving that all up to your design plans.
Rules:
1) Must be constructed mostly of PVC
2) Must be a coax or at least a piston valved design
I have a wood lathe and can also source out just about any parts needed. So post up your ideas and hopefully I can come up with an awesome one and post the final results up here for you guys!

I think rather than an "I'm too lazy to design it myself" post, this is more of a "you might have a design you want to make but no time/money/resources, and I will flesh it out" post.Gun Freak wrote:Everything you're asking of us has been done... Its called the Pneumatic Cannon Showcase

Possibly yes, but he could also go through the showcase and choose features he likes of different cannons and compile them into one.

Would be interesting to see someone do another, more modern, take of this.
Should be possible with a wood lathe and a little know-how. I think with PVC cannons these days people should make one that can do the tennis ball/golf ball/soda can thing, and then try and push some limits with other designs or move on to high pressures (hybrids ) otherwise you end up wasting money on cannons you will hardly use in the future and instead wish you had invested it in high performance power-house machines (hybrids)

Hear hear! A semi auto soda-can launcher is certainly within the scope of this design exercise I'm busy at work, so expect some drawingsWould be interesting to see someone do another, more modern, take of this.

It's not that I'm too lazy to design a cannon. It's not that at all. I've designed and built many of my own creations through countless research and planning.Gun Freak wrote:Everything you're asking of us has been done... Its called the Pneumatic Cannon Showcase
The point of this thread is for people to give me the ideas they have floating around in their head but have never made. I'm just looking for some new, exciting project. Sorry that it seemed as if I was being lazy, but quite the contrary: I want someone to challenge me. This doesn't mean give me your most ridiculous ideas though lol it has to be reasonable.

I second the wish for a large bore semi. Just don't get drunk and try to send beer as a present to people far away.

I've always wanted to build a compact piston valve, i.e. one without the female adapter behind the tee. Maybe you could do one in 4"? Then make a semi auto beer can loader

This would be a force of nature with a semi auto loading mechanism. Definitely a little expensive for the solid material, but worth it for the wow factor. You wouldn't even have to go to such a scale as to fire cans. If you make a compact golf ball semi auto that looks beyond clean and performs flawlessly, I would be happy.Maybe you could do one in 4"? Could you describe this a little more?Gun Freak wrote:I've always wanted to build a compact piston valve, i.e. one without the female adapter behind the tee. Maybe you could do one in 4"? Then make a semi auto beer can loader
And also, I don't think I'm up to machining a housing out of a massive piece of PVC. I also only have a wood lathe so I probably wouldn't be able to do it anyway.

If you have a drill press, you can make a piston housing.
He's talking about a piston housing that is fully contained in the Tee itself without any fittings to lengthen it.

Ok I understand. I'm not too interested in machining a piston housing though unless it is necessary for a more complicated design. The problem is that I would have to order the PVC stock online which will be expensive.Gaderelguitarist wrote:If you have a drill press, you can make a piston housing.

You don't have to machine the piston housing...
Shown with rubber cap piston. May be hard to understand. Ask for clearification

I like it!
Looks eerily familiar though...

@ the op....breech loading co-ax. Combine a "sort of" qdv/piston that seals on the outside diameter of the barrel (doughnut shaped piston with o-rings) with co-ax construction.
Breech loading through a threaded fitting with integral ram rod (need to set ammo ahead of ports in barrel) at the rear. Pneumatically actuated of course. Will need a forward stop for the piston as well....possibly use a barrel support that's well vented for flow, or a simple collar on the barrel.
Challenging enough??
