Patience, I will have it ready hopefully by Sunday. Why, is yours ready?

Also Ragnarok, that does sound optimistic... Sabot rounds are very unstable when they leave the muzzle of the gun. A sabot can deflect the direction of the round it carries up to 15 degrees. That's a worse case scenario though. An average sabot will cause about a degree of deflection, so in the end, you may be taking pot shots at something well beyond the round's effective range.

I can sense Rag is about to write a seriously long post about how you two are wrong.

This thread seems to have resulted in sod all, what is the point of it again?

Look at the first post, pretty self explaintory. And if you were joking around sorry, I can't read sarcasm. Anyway what we are talking about is perfectly on topic. I'm talking about sabots, which I plan to use for the shot. Also I would like to add that the deflection numbers in my last post are based of off multistage rockets that I make, which perform very much like a sabot would while it stages. I'm not saying I'll follow my statements to the edge of the Earth. I'm here to learn like everyone else. :)

I believe you mean rail road spikes, as rail road ties are a good four inches tall, six inches wide, and about five feet long, not to mention generally made of wood.

And those “nails” are called “spikes” and some are made to be driven into concrete, so I think they’d make a right dandy APFSDS round, just make sure not to get the aluminum spikes used in roofing.

also, if that’s true about sabots throwing off a round, then why is the big thing in muzzle loaders sabot rounds and why does the “most accurate tank in the world” run a smoothbore barrel specifically designed for sabot rounds?

Not pokin’ fun at you, these are legitimate questions, if any thing I’m pokin’ fun at myself ‘cause you’ve gone and got The Judge confuseafacated… :)

Yea that's what I meant. Also sabots made by the military are perfected in a lab before the even see a tank. They have the precision of the space shuttle.

So this is just a competition between you and Elitesniper?

I may be being a little optimistic, but I believe I could use HEAL at 30 bar to penetrate 6mm steel at a quarter mile range with my current dart design (and the sabot that will go with it).
Rag, your dart might have that much energy at a 1/4 mile but I'm a bit skeptical I.e my eye brow raised about 5mm....

A correctly made sabot will not deflect a shot. The trick is making it correctly.

As for the most powerful cannon so many things go into that factor I think it would be hard to tell unless you set some constants, like same targets, same ammo. With out a few constants it would be no different then comparing apples to oranges...

Well, you said that “at best it only deflects by a degree”, I figured by “at best” you meant professional grade stuff…
I swear, you must like confusing me… :)

Oh well, I don’t much care for these new fangled high velocity cartridges. More can be done with a bigger, heavier, round.

EDIT:

I agree, I think this contest needs a few constants, like, for example, both people shoot at ¼ inch, unhardened, steel plate.

1/4 is too easy.... you have to stack the targets at a certain range. They must penetrate 1/4 steel and two bags of cement at fifty yards with a chamber volume of 500 cubic inches. 1x mix or 130 psi if its a pneumatic. The object is a railroad spike the weighs approximately 2 pounds. As long as those constants are met you can do what ever you wish. Valves, cb ratio, fuel its all up to the contestants...

Thats just an example....I'm sure every one else has stuff they would want to see be done...

I dunno if 1/4 steel is too easy. If you hold it in your hands you know what I mean. And the loose rules on target and round is designed to make you think. It's not all about power. It's half power half showmanship. The man with more creativity can win against the person with the stronger cannon. It gives both sides an opportunity to win. And plus I think creativity should be awarded anyway, even if it's not the point. Oh and yes Maxus the 2nd, it is a competiton between me and elite sniper. It may seem like I have an unfair advantage, but really it's just because I can't keep my mouth shut. elitesnpier is probably at home making some sort of uranium based, tungsten tipped armor piercing round...of DOOM!!

I think 1/4 steel is plenty hard enough for most of use it was just an example. Nice round holes get boring after awhile....

Well in this case it would happen to be that the coming events fit into two threads. One about the ammo, and one about the target and competition. They overlap very nicely.

BTW the videos, unlike other competitions can have more than one shot/ target/ ammunition type. So I'm not going to just try the penetrator round. Others will come before and, maybe, after it.

EDIT Yay my Home Depot has 2'' thick foam board. I will be able to make the sabot after all. :D

I find it funny how, less than one month after I became the first person here to shoot through 1/4" normalized steel plate, people are saying that it's "easy" and talking about stacking it with concrete and such.

I suggest that you try to scratch the plate you're shooting at with the spike first - if you hammer the spike against the plate and it doesn't scratch the steel, you're wasting your time by making it into a dart.
