i have never used bit defender before but it looks to be ok. you just have to try one and figure out which is best for you. AVG is very nice and i wholeheartedly recommend it.

Bit Defender is currently THE leader, and I've heard that it has an excellently low amount of resource consumption. If this weren't the family comp, it would have it already. Oh yeah, and to get rid of McAffee you will have to find the special remover some guy made. Google it, but be sure you know you are getting the correct program.
Oh, and here is my crowded desktop. I usually hide the icons though.

Windoze defender sucks. Get adaware from lavasoft. And... Darnit I can't remember what another good one is at the moment. I would get the demo of bitdefender. AVG 2007 as tested by PC MAG scored a little low. In fact, they hit the bottom of the list.

Defender is OK for some basic real time spyware protection, it isn't an antivirus program...and it doesn't do very well with rootkit problems. Spybot 1.6 is a great spyware detector and cleaner...and it's free and does a decent job with rootkits.

DON'T load multiple antivirus programs simultaneously....they'll beat each other up and your performance will suffer, or worse. Pick one to use and run with it.

With alphanumeric browsing. I.E. I press a letter or number on the keyboard until I find what I want.
