Heres my latest venture into spudding. You may remember me (or not haha) from the nice copper rifles I've made (still havent seen anyone copy my design, cool haha) or the all pnuematic inline BBMG. I don't dabble in spudguns for anything other than destruction of old inanimate objects, and rarely fire spuds lol. So that said, I'm not really crazy about designing mini spud-guns, I like to stick to high KE projectiles. I also like to heckle people on their ideas, and coming from a paintball marker valve design background/mechanical engineer I've got a few of my own...



I couldnt really think of anything to describe 'er, so I figured I'd just put it out like it is - 10 gallon. that equates to a little over 2250 cu in. of chamber area. Is it the biggest chamber? No.. probably not. What makes it unique then, I mean why even bother if its not the biggest, baddest spudder out there right? Well heres why.



I'm sure I've seen ideas like it before, I'm not sure if I've ever seen it implemented however. Its a simple idea. Kinda like combining two "T valves" into 1. An "X" valve. but not just any "X" valve, a 3" Inch porting "X" valve. This should pack a whallop eh? Barrel will be 3" Sch 80, Ammo, none other than the venerable 20/24 oz soda bottle filled with anything from water, pykrete, concrete, gravel, poop, or something completely different which we cannot speak of in these forums....

I've already got all the fittings ordered from Savko.com, they should be here tomarrow or the next day or two. I will buy the piping after that, and construct the wooden tray to hold it all. I will eventually add wheels and a a rear kick stand like a howitzer for mobility and stability. I will be using a spare tire scissor jack for elevation adjustment.

IDK if rifled would be a good idea for water balloons because being liquid, Seems like the spin would put it off course maybe dramatically. 8)

Gippeto - you are correct, the old launchers are lost, just for ol times sake, here they are again.

Copper daddys. Marble flinger on top, 12 gram co2 launcher on bottem. Both pack an unbelievable whallop at only 100 psi (and I could take them to 250... or higher haha)

Thats right, its a modified talon paintball gun!! modified to do what tho? To fire semi automatic!! My own "autococking" design on this gun, and I circulated it through pbnation.com where it drew a little attention in the tinkerer's guild. It could fire as fast as you could pull the trigger with little shootdown (which came out to be around 4-5 balls per second) not bad for a 14 year old and a dremel eh?

Seems like a whale of a lot of trouble for a water ballon shooter. How are you proposing to rifle such a beast?

Those are some rreeeeally nice cannons and some excellent designs. It's a shame we haven't seen more of you!
I had thought about using a cross piece to house a piston valve, but since it wasn't going to improve flow by any large amount , I decided against it. If nothing else it will look excellent. I hope you have a big compressor or else it'll take as long to pressurize as it does to build!

I noticed in your picture it looks like you have DWV fittings there. I assume suitible high pressure fittings will be used on the real gun?

Looks good, but if you're building a cannon that large, more barrel bracing than is shown in the diagram wouldn't go amiss.

not only does that sound extremely powerfull, but it's just as simple as a normal tee piston valve, I can't believe someone hasn't already thought of this.

o, btw, I might "borrow" this idea and make somthing a little smaller

Well actually from what I've picked up here... I think That your design of valve will offer no advantages over the old T valve besides being able to have a simple 2 barrel attachment. Theres some equation that figures how far back the piston must move to make an opening the size of the barrel opening. Once you have this extra air flowing at it will just... go out like it would from the first barrel, I really don't think this would help.
On a better note that looks like its gonna be one hell of a cannon, what valve are you gonna use to pilot?

They do pop up every once in a while, I believe that jrrdw may have made one, but I have seen a few of them.

Good luck on the big gun mc, I'm sure you'll run into all sorts of challenging and unforseen setbacks and explosions along the way.

Nice cannon design. Should pack a great punch. Just be sure and brace that barrel really good or the recoil could snap those elbows. And if you are bracing the barrel directly rather than the valve then try to avoid dry firing without a barrel because it will have a surprising amount of kick just from the air, enough to possibly break fittings.
