Hybrid Questions

Harness the power of precision mixtures of pressurized flammable vapor. Safety first! These are advanced potato guns - not for the beginner.

So I live a boring life, right..... Well I have built several pneumatics in my past and have knowledge. Me and my friends have built 2 or 3 combustions over the years... But now I want to bump it up a step and TRY and move on to hybrids. It seems if you want to build a hybrid you need to know the safety factors and what the hell you are doing. So before I actually design a cannon. I want a few ( more like alot ) of tips on making a hybrid. Keep in mind that I am a uber n3wb. Ive read some of the other hybrid topics and using some kind of metal for the chamber is a MUST. I took that into note.

Some of the questions that I have are.

1) What does 2x, 3x etc mean (obviously the higher it goes the more power)

2) How would I fill the chamber? Is there one inlet for both fuel and air?

3) Burst disk or piston?

4) What are the best electrodes/ignitor to use? I was thinking that using screws wouldnt be airtight.

5) About how much money would I spend on a DECENT (meaning that it isnt ghetto and safety was taken into consideration) hybrid

6) Where can I find/make a propane meter (im looking the the how-to section right now)

Thats about all of the questions I have for now. Obviously if there is some important factor that I need to know about and I dont already know about it, PLEASE tell me. I dont want to die a horrible death (reminds meh of that one topic)

1) A normal combustion fires at 1X. A 2x means that you inject two times the amount of fuel, then inject another atmosphere of air (usually around 15psi).

2) I put a schrader on my propane meter and filled through there.

3) With a burst disk

4) You can use screws, as long as they are insulated from the chamber, you can seal it with epoxy.

5) Expect to spend $50 or more dollars

1) What does 1x, 2x, 3x etc mean (obviously the higher it goes the more power)
I means the atmosphere to fuel ratio. A regular combustion is a 1x- meaning it uses the normal atmospheric pressure and 1 unit of fuel. 2x means it doubles the air pressure and uses 2 units of fuel

2) How would I fill the chamber? Is there one inlet for both fuel and air?
Some people have used two connectors and soime have used 1. Don't forget to use a ball valve to seal it up though.

3) Since the cannon is going to be pressurized before combustion, how would I seal the barrel?
Burst Disk

4) What are the best electrodes/ignitor to use? I was thinking that using screws wouldnt be airtight.
I'd use a stun gun. You can use screws, but tap the threads into the chamber before, and use teflon tape.

5) About how much money would I spend on a DECENT (meaning that it isnt ghetto and safety was taken into consideration) hybrid
Probably over 100 bucks depending on what you want from the gun

Edit- damn, I was beaten

If you don't know that I would really recommend doing A LOT more research before attempting to build a hybrid. That is probably one of the first things you learn about hybirds.

1: a 1x cannon uses 4.2%propane (combustion gun) if you goes to 2x you doubble the amount of propane and put in 100% of the chamber volume of air (15psi).
for a 3x you tripple the amount of propane and put in 200% air (ABOUT 30psi) and it goes on forever..

2: you have to design your meter to do whatever you want.

3: the burst disk i told you about on msn that fail on the pressure peak of the combustion pressure.

4: a sparkplug made out of a threaded cap works wonders with a camera/coil ignition.

5: if you have heard of my UPGBH10x it did cost me $1200 and rising.

now just to make sure your topic does not get filled up with "you don't know what you are doing" i tell all the people to give you a chance and help you on your questions.

I agree. I probably shouldn't have typed up that whole thing in my other post... Especially if you can't even figure that out.

Spudfarm it's not only about being told how to do something, it's about learning how to do something for yourself so you can do so in the future.

If he does the research he wouldn't need to be worried that people may not be telling him something and he wont have to worry that he'll die a horrible death because he knows what he's doing. But that's not the case.

Seriously all those questions could have been answered by looking at one or two Hybird Showcase topics by Spudblaster15 or similar. That's how I learnt the basics awhile ago, researching.

The first three questions he has asked makes me believe he has never seen or paid attention to a hybrid before.

I knew that about 90% of people used burst disks. and the other 10% use other things. I wanted to know which was better.

Well then should'nt you have asked 'Should I use a piston or a burst disk as the valve?'.

That would seem like a more logical question. In case you still want the answer to that, stick with burst disk. A piston valve is far more advanced.

You won't die a horrible death, but you do need to scope things up some. Dump the sched 40 PVC, sched 80 will take you only to the 3x level. Anything beyond 3x and you need to plan to be going all metal.

Take a long look through the hybrid showcase. Also, here's a lookat one of DYI's metal creations. And a look at a sched 80 model over at www.advancedspuds.com.

well some use piston valves wich is harder to make and have less performance and are quick to reload, burst disk's is the opposite

mrcrowley: i think that the ones that wants to help him should reply and not the ones that is going to complain about his knowlege. hybrids is really hard to understand and if he gets it he will look back on this topic and think that he where stupid.
no offence to you if you took it that way crowley

Okay, I changed the questions to not make me look like a dumb shit, even though i am when it comes to hybrids. I just wanted some help and tip so i didnt kill myself.

Thank you spudfarm.

I see where you are coming from totally, I even had a thread like this but with more advanced questions. Stuff like this I could work out on my own by studying hybrids.

It's more a lack of trying to understand or research that annoys me, not the questions he asks. But the idiocy of the questions are usually directly proportionate to the time he's spent researching. Judging by his questions, he hasn't spent enough on the research.

I agree with you. But what I am doing by posting this thread, is letting some people answer my questions while i am away. I can let people answer my questions and then multitask by reasearching at the same time. If you know what I mean. I admit though...I am pretty lazy.

That's a flaw when planning to build a hybrid.
