Depends what you want to shoot really, if you're stuck with a ball valve though I wouldn't go past 1 inch.

If you wanna use a ball valve, use a metal one because pvc one's takes approx 3 secs to open an metal 1/3 of a sec.(good metals one lubrificated)
But please dont use a ball valve, use a sprinkler valve.They cost 20 $ and are 5 x better then a ball valve.

FWIW, 2" barrels requires fairly largish potatoes to consistantly seal the barrel and because of a typically higher mass projectile, tend to kick more when shot.SpudBlaster15 wrote:1.5" or 2" works well for potatoes, and is my most frequently used size.
