rc helicopter new hobby for a little while

I hale learned to HATE the Futaba 4 channel controllers. We use them in the BEST robotics competition, and the left stick cost us the match. Also, no buttons. Or toggle switches. I hate the thing so much. [/irrelevant rant]

idk i like flying stuff for a long time when i was 11 before i could get online my dad got me flight simulator and i loved it
i play for hours
i play the helicopter the most cuz it was the most challenging

Use that simulator. A LOT!

My wife has a Honeybee cp2, each time it crashes (this happens frequently) it costs $30+ to get it flying again.

IMO hi was on the right track.

Ever heard of a foamy?

Made from foam board with flat or kline-fogelman air foils, very simple and cheap to build.

Using inexpensive electric power systems and small radio gear they are tops in the "fun per buck" club.

I have a foamy, Kline-fogelman, zagi sitting behind me right now.

Not as much fun as blowing @#@@ up, but a close second.

I have 3 RC gas planes at my house that I "inherited"... All of them need their engines cleaned for them to start, and ALL of them need new batteries (they were NiCad's) for their controllers... On top of that I'm a bit intimidated by their 4ft wingspan. Where the hell am I going to fly these things??

EDIT: Sorry that is off topic. I wouldn't dabble with heli's myself. TOO damn expensive for my taste. They break SO easily. You have to spend at LEAST $400 to get any useful experience with those things. I say go with a foamy, and a powerful brushless motor. They have really good manueverability, and won't have to be put into a ziplock bag when you crash.

Yeah, if you think spudding is an expensive hobby, RC anything isn't going to be your cup of tea...with duct fan planes and helicopters being at the top end of the hobby. Couple that with the very good possibilty that your investment in time and mucho $$$ will eventually crash into bits..... 8)

A basic foamy airframe costs in the order of $10 or less. Most crashes result in the need for some 5 minute epoxy and/or packing tape, maybe a new bamboo skewer.(Carbon fibre? We don't need no stinking carbon fibre.)

Radio gear, motors, controllers, etc. can be had out of china for surprisingly little. Even here, basic radio gear will set you back less than $200 (Mine is a 4 channel Hitec with micro gear, cost me $150.)

Hobbies do cost money, that's a reality. So unless you decide to take up bouncing a ball against a wall, (That one's essentially free. ) you need to decide what you can afford to do, that you would also like to do.

But, as Starman points out, it's your decision, and you have to make it. That's part of what having freedom of choice is about.

Foam, another thing I cant find in New Zealand. Country of THE most expensive PVC in the developed countries.

Hey, I would buy an airplane instead as they are easier to fly(less channels> basic ones) and you have more fun bc they are less likely to get damaged and have longer flight duration. Thats from my experience.

mmm do not get an rc heli! go to a club and try to fly them first, i made the silly mistake of buying one $250aus out of my pocket and i still have the chopper and cant fly it. but a foamy is sounding like a good idea gotta search for some more information and i will let you know how i go
