Thank you Lent for the assist! Steel wool has acoustic silencing properties to it within the way it is constructed. I know it has a cooling element to it but was unsure on how influential that aspect of it would be on silencing spudding. But in any case, steel wool would is an exceptional packing material.

i've made two, both for pneumatics, and they don't really have too much of an effect because they are both of a reasonable size, they only really take the crack out of the shot.
i suppose if i had included baffles, then they would have been better, but its a case of effort vs. gain and i was already getting a cool sound out of my suppressor so i didn't include them.

Here's a heavy duty 0.22 air rifle suppressor I had made, and illustrated below is one made for my 0.177 Anics A3000, with composite foam/rubber baffles, drilled out lego block spacers and naturally, plenty of epoxy

I was wondreing if anyone has done a comparison of ported outer barrels vs nonported outer barrels.
I made one a while back for my paintball gun. Like usual, the inside barrel is ported. The outside of it is not. I've seen designs for both and wondered which was better.

The point of a silencer is that it provides a space for the propelling gasses to expand and reduce in pressure before exiting. Making holes in the outer sleeve directly reduces the efficiency of this effect and therefore makes for a less effective silencer. This is why there isn't a single commercial suppressor design with holes in its body other than those through which the projectile passes.SP00K wrote:I was wondreing if anyone has done a comparison of ported outer barrels vs nonported outer barrels.

what can I say, I'm proud of what I doI was waiting to see those beauties pop up in this thread

Jack, I believe that if the barrel itself is not ported then there is not a problem.
I understand commercial suppressor's used by government agencies such as blackwater do not have have any holes on the exterior of the suppressor. But within a pistol there is a smaller volume of gas being transferred downstream. That small volume of gas fills up into the expansion chamber like I have drawn earlier and fizzles out shortly after. In a spud gun the more volume of air needs to escape somehow eventually or else it will just create a backpressure volume and be quite counter productive. That is why I have chosen to drill a couple holes on 2 different axis's of the expansion chamber. You can see my design and see it's similarities to an actual firearm; the only difference is the vent holes I chose to create.

I'm kind of with Xxplosive on this one, i agree that there is a larger volume of air to shift... and holes in the outside of the silencer is one way to deal with that issue... but you would need to slow the air significantly to reduce the noise levels, because otherwise it would just have the effect of a muzzle brake and it could actually be louder.
so i think the problem with your design is that you put the porting before the baffles, i would put baffels and expansion chambers then at the tip, some porting.

guys if you were to put holes on the outer tube it would act as a muzzle break and last time i checked a muzzle break is not even close to the same effect and use of a silencer so all in all id scrap that idea and forget you brought it up

Pocket look at my design drawn up previously. The vent holes on the exterior come into effect after the air has channeled down the the barrel and has been diverted through the section of baffles. Then the air is finally pushed into the expansion chamber where it passes through packed steel wool to finally make its exit.
I built the silencer and it worked fine for me. It took away the bite in the shot and left it with a rather pleasant "thunnnk" noise. But to each their own. Everyone will have a different opinion on the subject matter.

wow lol, this conversation is hard to follow. I'll just make a tutorial on making one later with warnings of "not to proceed without a stamp" and yada, yada, yada.
lol, wild discusion. I might even post some video of sound reduction results if I have the time.

Please do, there are hardly any good sound comparisons out there. If you do, you should edit the file so that it switches back and forth between the two shots relatively quickly, so it easier to really hear the differene.
will do. should be posted in a weeks time. a lot of school work this week so i will be relatively occupied...
