Long range recon really only applies to snipers and occasional special forces teams (LRRPs haven't been that popular since Vietnam, only Force Recon occasionally fills that roll, most other SFs work in force multiplication with antives). UAVs mini and large don't have the longevity of a team in a fixed position (often popular roads and thoroughfares).

Even in airsoft, I've done sniper at Lionclaws and ended up just hiking up the freaking mountain and overlooking the AOE for the entire game calling out positions to my commander and watching the battle go on.

In that case though, if you're not actually taking out opponents, you're more of an observer than a sniper.

They may be observing but they're labeled as a sniper team.
