Full auto prototype

Inspired by this I've started building a prototype automatic mechanism.

This particular mechanism when finished will probably not be incorporated in a gun. If it shows potential for respectable power at higher pressures then milling one from aluminum would be an option.

Op. pressure of this will be up to 120 psi, and the V2 (if all goes well) around 800 psi. It fires .22 BB's, and will have a small hopper mechanism.

While it doesn't look like much is done, all that I need to do is glue the piston and gas tubes on, and add a spring.






Thoughts? I don't know how well this will perform, if at all. I doubt the guy is around either.

Why would people bother with automatic mechanisms if vortexes were better?

A vortex has a much higher ROF, and the amount of ammo it uses is a bad thing. This will allow more power per shot at less air consumption.

Though how well it will work specifically, dunno.

I tacked it together with glue, and covered it in copious amounts of epoxy (tacked pictured).



Testing should come tomorrow. Just got to make a backplate and spring, which is easy..

Good luck with it, I was always fascinated by that auto, though for some reason was never inspired to copy it.

It's going well, the epoxy has stopped running (hard, but not enough for tests) and the single moving part still functions, plus no airways are blocked.

I'd like to see how tunable this design is, along with what power I can get out.

Like others, I've always wondered about that particular design. The thing looks pretty good but the performance is the key.

What did you mill the block out of? Acrylic (plexiglas)? Do you have the special bits for hard/brittle plastics are did you manage the drilling with standard twist bits?

I used HSS precision twist bits. They are brand new, and razor sharp. I hate to use a machinists vice bolted down, and everything clamped in tightly, along with lots of lubricant. I cracked several, but those were before I set up the machinists vice on the drill press.

I tested it, but the cycling was unreliable and much too fast. I experimented with a stiffer spring, and cycling became extremely unreliable. I may experiment more, but in all honesty a QEV and popoff is a much simpler, reliable and powerful method.

while im sure 56k users love the fact that your pictures load very quickly, they are soo tiny that I cant really see any details.

With that said though, the best of luck to your design and it would be interesting to see what kind of pressures an aluminum one could handle.

That should essentially cover it.

The problem being, it's a bad choice of valve unless you aren't wanting much power.

Nope, he was into the pop-off/qev side of things I think.

He did use a persplex block, but it was a different design.

My QEV will probably go to Des-2.. I'm shifting my shooting to out of town (the police had complaints of noise..well not really, but you can hear the guns from the station). The sound is unmistakable, and I'm known for being a "terrorist" so they just recommended (thank god) that "whatever the hell I was doing" be moved away from other people.

I can't imagine a high pressure automatic would be easy to get away with in town..
