Shop Ideas.

Ok let me cut the sh*t in this first paragraph, then ill lull you in the others below this. Essentially our current workshop is in our basement, my mom hates the dust, so its getting moved to our newly acquired garage. We also have our "toolroom" down stairs in our large water heater room. This thing is seriously knee deep in tools and accessories, so that also needs to be moved. So Im building this new shop and need idears'! Below are the two ideas I had, one of which ive never seen used.

First have a air manifold around by the tools, and have lines running off it for each tool. Each machine then will a little line running to it to blow off the work piece. Also have the air run threw the walls and 2 drop downs for nail guns. The other idea I had was to put all tools on one wall, and make all there work tables the same height. This would allow long pieces of wood and stuff to be laid across several machines.

I need more ideas, and suggestions! Just even if it is so simple as to stating the pros/ cons of your workspace so that I make solutions to such. All input greatly appreciated!

use PVC to make a dust collection system and attach it to a shopvac, hrm....if you plan to do the airline thing, use copper/steel/brass pipe, i've heard on some machining forums that using PVC is dangerous due to the constant pressure in it and possibility of being bumped and rupturing

Go with the copper,it doesnt get affecred by UV light like pvc does which does weaken after a period of time and copper is less likely for a blow out from dropping a tool on it etc.

SpudShot, if you hadent said anything Id be using PVC. Herm where would I place the collectors?

rna_duelers, do shops in Austrila not have walls? It will be run in the wall, so it should be nice and dark. Bah! I hate copper, its a b*tch to "weld". Im going black of galvanized.

the collectors can just be Tee's in the line, put them where ever you think you'd need them, we have one under the workbench that a normal shop vac hose is attached to, and one that goes right into the vaccum port on my sander

Are you going to pout the foundation? Make sure that it is level and there is rebar on it wiht holster under it. And put some gravel down and pack it down good. Put the forms up and make sure they dont slope of it will be unlevel. I think you know the rest. Make some shevles on the walls, 15" deep out of some 1X2, make a work bench around all the wall with shevles and some pull out drows.

If you good with electrical put some GFIC outlets around it and some floresent lights hanging over the workbench. Get some 1/2" sch40 and put it along the walls and tap a mael connector in to it with a check vavle and there is you air supply. Out two runner on the walls and put wood cut on a 45* angel for a pipe rack. Take a shop vac and one end of your shop and tap in to the switch and put it on the wall and use some of the perf pipe for you ventilation system.

Depending on how big you are going to make it, close of a 5X5 space for painting and glueing. Put in some ventailation in there and a light with a switch, a little shevel on the wall. Use some exterior grade ply for the floors 5/8'' is the min, make sure to put all the studs and joists 16" apart for code. Use pressure treaded wood for skid runners. I got some more stuff it you need it.

I typed this all yesterday but accidently exited it out.

Glue jar lids to the underside of your shelves and keep small parts like screws and stuff in them, then screw the jar into the lid.

My brother told me that his old shop class had floor level vents in the walls that continuously sucked the dust off the floor, there might have been a vent in the base of each tool.

Use liquid nails or screw them on there.

It is easy to "weld" and it is cheaper than galv.

yes atlantis my industrial tech class had the same thing. it just had like four floor level vents around the room. when your done working you just sweep the dust near the vents and it sucks it all up.

Yes, never underestimate the power of floor vac vents! They have the power to suck up unknowing rodents and other small animals. (which is pretty fun if the the vacuum pipes are clear.) Plus floor vacuum vents are quite useful, however I doubt a shop vac would be powerful enough. You should buy professional shop dust vacuums.

use a leaf blower for the floor vac, well that might not work to well because this shop is inside isnt it.

If you put in a Wye and have it on the wye you prob will get suction from it.

hmmm... in order for a leaf blower blow it must first suck.... just connect the hose thing to the side part. also some leaf blowers are also vacumes like the Homelite 30cc Vac Attack II Gas Blower/Vac/Mulcher it can be found at home depot if you dont believe me.
