Maybe i am not that lucky, because now the dc motor controller will get obselete and if it fails... i would need to buy a new set of brushless motor and controller.[/quote]
Some people have had theirs for 10 years, and still not had failure (that they mention on their sites).
Not to mention, the circuit on the 400watt models can't really be that complex. Essentially, it is rectified, PWM'ed, and maybe smoothed.
The brushless would be much more complex, and I am envious of the ability of the controller to automatically vary power as load changes, to retain RPM's.
Apparently, you can take cuts of more than .020, which is unheard of on brushed motor models.
7 x 12 Mini lathe bargain
It might make the price of the mini-lathe go up of 100 $.The brushless would be much more complex, and I am envious of the ability of the controller to automatically vary power as load changes, to retain RPM's.

I am pretty happy to have a mini-athe, but it will be very soon an obselete model...
It might not be a that good deal after all...
Did you use the 10% coupon I posted earlier?
and I'm still calling around to find a local harbor freight that stocks the 7x12, so I can use one of my 6 20% coupons.
If you decide you don't like it and want the new one, I'll give you 335 for it, shipped, (or, do you live near NE ohio?)

Finally, i will keep it and fully upgrade the electronics
((I.E. optical encoder with rpm ballast to avoid stall at low speeds and if i get to a bigger dc motor or ac three phases ac motor with a high power h-bride to control in reverse /forward with pulse witdh modulation by a microcontroller with a 4 digits rpm readout ... With that upgrade (fully made by me, even the pcb's ) at 5 rpm there would be all the torque that you need by the rpm ballast ))
But one of my concerns is to still be able to make threads as i am not really informed for that ( i will wait to get mine to dissasemble it and see )
I wont do that just for the features, but also for the learning course that it would offer in electronics and machining .
Threading will be fine, as the spindle controls the leadscrew via gears, not by sensing the rpm's and driving another motor accordingly.
As for the upgrade, you could probably rig something up in Arduino, Especially if you go for the 3 phase.
A brushless motor would require more parts...

let us know when you get it, and if UPS attacked it with a forklift...

I am a PIC micro dude and i will keep the dc motor, "just" add an optical encoder to make an rpm ballast, it would give more power out of the dc motor. I might need a better set of gears then.As for the upgrade, you could probably rig something up in Arduino, Especially if you go for the 3 phase.
The lathe will be here this weekend! I need to order a set of basic tools to start playing with it.
You really should have ordered the tools at the same time. I wouldn't be able to stand having a lathe and no tools to play with.
An Update: I emailed Homier again, and Megan doesn't know when it will be back in stock.
