i am turning 15 in 2 weeks, and i want to buy a shotgun, does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should get? my maximum price range is $500-$600, i sort of want a pump-action or a semi-automatic, prefrebly with a 10 round magazine. if anyone could give me a model with a detachable 5-10 round clip, that would be very helpful. i also forgot, i would like to buy a 12 gauge, as appossed to a 10,20 or 4-10. also any other suggestions of rifles or shotguns that i could get for $500 or less, would be great :D thanks alot!

I'd highly recommend a Mossberg 500 or Remington Wingmaster 870.

I shoot a lot of skeet. I've used $2,000 competition guns, and I still think the two guns I mentioned are just as good, for a quarter of the price.
You can get a brand new Mossberg 500 for less than $300, or a Wingmaster for less than $400. Both come with a 6-8 rd tube magazine, but can be converted to a clip with a kit.

What do you want to use the gun for? Hunting, target/skeet, self defense, etc...?

There are a ton of options for both guns (barrel lengths and styles, chokes, stocks, grips, sight systems) and I can recommend a setup for your intended use. For instance, for a hunting/skeet gun you'd want a longer barrel and full stock. For a self defense gun, you'd want a shorter barrel and a folding stock. Etc.. so give me some more info.

Be safe.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

thanks alot pete zaria, to awnser your question, i shoot alot of skeet as well, i just use the guns that they have there. i live in a very good small town, so i doubt i would need it for much self defense. where could i get the conversion kit that you speak of, and is it possible to switch from a full stock to maybe a pistol grip or folding, like back and forth? thanks alot :D

Don't even start a "gun control" topic!

M3NT4L, if he's going to BUY a gun then he has taken hunters safety and has probably been shooting for a while. Just because you don't know anything about guns doesn't mean there not safe!

ok im 14 and have 4 high powered rifles. i can be crazy at times but when it gets done to one wrong move and someones heads blown off i get very serious. If i where you get the mosberg. All the cops use them so they must be doing something right and mosberg has a huge reputation with there shotguns. Also look into a remington sps shotgun. i have heard those are very good guns.

Sorry! I didn't mean he was either irresponsable or imature. I meant his parents, the reason i say this is that my parents would neverlet me have anything from a gun to an m-16 (thats why i make these guns). Im 15 and i dont like guns and if my parents ever let me have one i would think they dont care about me because they are quite dangerous. Maybe my mentality isnt at a patchpoint with yours because i live in miami a very urban area, maybe where you guys live it is rural. Anywhow i am sorry it might have been a harsh accusation.

his parents probably unlock them and put a trigger lock on them when they are ready to be used. i have been target shooting for five years and i have been getting very good at it, to the point where the supervisors were impressed. here in massachussetts you dont need to liscence a particular gun, what you need is a something called an F.I.D. card, which entitles you to own a rifle or shotgun if you are under 18. i cant remember what the liscence is called when you are over 18 here, but that isnt important to me. also, of course my parents know, im not going to go to the gun store with my uncle and hide a shotgun under my bed

Get the Mossberg 500. They're inexpensive, work wonderfully, and require very little maintenance except for regular cleaning and oiling.

I like a folding stock - folds up small for storage (and its fun), but folds out for using at the range or hunting. Stick with the basic wood stock for awhile and switch it later, after you're used to the gun's balance.

Google "mossberg accessories" and you'll find a ton of stuff, including magazine and drum-magazine kits.

Here's what I have setup for a multipurpose shotgun (defense, skeet, hunting).
Mossberg 500 receiver with top-folding stock with integrated shell holder.
Interchangeable barrels - I keep an 18" on it at home, and put on a 26" for skeet/hunting. The 18" barrel has a tactical light clamped to it.
I like the 6rd tube magazine, because you can load in one at a time instead of changing clips. For instance, if you're out of ammo, which takes longer, changing the entire clip or just shoving in another shell? :) Plus, in all reality, even in self defense or hunting, you should never need more than 6 shells. Period.

Shooting is a fun hobby when you’re safe about it. I’m sure you’re very mature and responsible for your age (I had guns at your age, too). So forgive me for lecturing, but I just have to say this.
From the millisecond you pull the trigger on a gun, you can never take that bullet back. Make sure you know what you’re shooting at, and what’s behind whatever you’re shooting at, before you even put your finger on the trigger. Never point a gun at anyone, even if it’s unloaded and you’re just joking around. That’s how people get killed. They’re called accidents for a reason. And the last thing is, in a self defense situation, don’t even draw your weapon unless you’re really prepared to kill with it. Using a gun to intimidate someone usually results in getting shot. Grab a book from your library called “in the gravest extreme”. It’s a 100-page guide to armed self defense.

Again, I’m sorry to lecture you.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.
