I finally got myself a quick release hook... something I've wanted since I was ten years old.

This particular model (largest of three) goes for around $530 normally. I bought this one from someone on eBay for just $100, and it's brand new. He originally bought it from McMaster (Part #3398T31) to use in some sort of testing rig which ended up not happening.

Quick Specs:
18,000lb working load
10,000lb release load

This thing is huge and very heavy (around 11lbs), but no doubt tough enough to handle anything I can put it through. I have no idea what to use it for yet... any ideas?

I was thinking catapult or something like that, but on the scale I'd be capable of building, a much smaller hook like #3899T55 would probably suffice. Even if I don't have a use for it, I couldn't resist buying something this cool.

I'd say a giant trebuchat, there's a video on makezine.com about using them for trebuchats
That is all.

I have no idea what they are called but they shoot huge arrows (spears) and they look like huge crossbows. I'd make one of those. that would be totally awesome, shooting spears through trees :D .

I was thinking ballista myself. It would be great for some sort of hook release, spring loaded device.

Here's a quick video of it dropping a 40lb sandbag. I need to find some heavier stuff... http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff15 ... 001636.flv

wow actually that's seams like something I've wanted, but I didn't know it existed, or what it was called.

I would like to use it for repelling off balconies and stuff and be able to release the rope when I got to the bottom

Once you reach the bottom, why not just unclip yourself with a carabiner? Unless you want to find out how far you can drop before breaking your ankle.

Ballistas are cool, and the valveless gun looks awesome. But both are far too complicated. I'm not sure there's really much I can do without lots of time and money. This thing's size and weight actually limits what I can do with it. Something smaller like a snap shackle could be good for smaller projects.

Well, that was a interesting use for $100....
I say go buy a crane and a car. No wait, a truck. Don't waste that $100!
