It also looks like PVC, unless that's just a casing and there's something interesting inside.

It's part of a selective fire electropneumatic thing. The brains are shown, and inside the gray PVC are components that drive it.

The rest of the necessary parts are on order but without them it will be several weeks before I can make much additional progress. I think you'll be especially interested in what this does, Lockednloaded.

What EXACTLY does it do? PM that to me if you like, I'll give you the benefit of doubt.

It's a low powered pneumatic launcher. The electronic aspect offers it greater capabilities like selective fire and eventually automated operation. Its exact purpose isn't all that thrilling to spudders, but you'll like how it works.

If so, I wouldnt mind programming a 3 round burst, a full auto operation and perhaps any other programming you may need

Good to see electronics brought to spudgunnery, people seem to fear electronics as if it's a dark art.

I've been thinking about a knife valve actuated by a solenoid from a starter motor, I'm not into microprocessors so I plan to use a 4017 and a rotary switch to provide 1 to 8 round bursts and use a 555 for ROF control.

Also included would be a switch to bypass the 4017 for automatic fire.

@Fnord: Yeah, that CO2 reg serves no other purpose to me.

@Davidvaini: Right you are. And much appreciated, I'll definitely consult you if I need any help. The circuit set up on that breadboard simulates the gun's operation with some LEDs. I currently have semi and full-auto loops written. I'll draw from that code to make the final one when I finish soldering the motor shield and receive the solenoid.

@Zeus: I was always turned off by electronics until I saw some really cool things done with them recently. Then I found Arduino and it really can't get any easier than this. Hopefully after I get this working more people here will want to try similar things. It's not too expensive and the possibilities are almost endless. I'm really tempted to put a small airsoft gun on my BOE Bot too.

A rotary switch can be used to stop the 555 at any count by holding the enable high. An open position on the rotary switch can be used to go full auto. A pushbutton switch on the resistor feeding the RC circuit of the 555 can be used as a trigger and if tied to the reset of the 4017 can be used to reset the Johnson counter in the decade counter.

I have a future plan to use a crystal timer with a 4017 to fire a string of disposable camera flashes for a burst of strobe photos for some optical chronograph photography. A wire break will release the timer reset pin to start the strobe volley and output 9 will be used to disable the clock once the burst is finished. I have some 1KHZ 4 pin oscillators. This will give a 0.005% clock timebase for triggering the strobes 1ms apart. The strobe time base will be more accurate than the markings on a tape measure.
