Sort of pneumatic related, but only just.

We are having an altitude acclimatization chamber installed at work (doesn't everyone ?) and the basic plumbing has been done.

Sort of makes you want a bigger cannon to hook up to it.

Thats very interesting. How far above sea level is your work? This is to get a person used to the thin air? I've never heard of these...

Our office is about 15m ASL , I do the IT contract support for a VERY large multinational food company, this is for the sports nutrition division. We have a fully fitted out gymnasium and sports science unit that is used to coach high performance athletes, Olympians, AFL / NRL etc.

In the gym we have built a sealed glass box, 4m x 4m and 3m high with some stationary bikes inside. This puppy is supposedly going to evacuate enough air to create a high altitude training environment without leaving the suburbs.

How does that work? Pressure differential between altitudes?

In the real world the O2 levels change with altitude and hence pressure, this system doesn't change the pressure, it changes the mix to simulate the effect. Supposedly over long periods of use it increases your red blood cell count and so makes you a more efficient athlete. When I said earlier it "evacuates enough air", I should have said it replaces enough room air with low O2 air.

They reckon it may have taken over 10,000 years for the Himalayan people to adapt to their climate and end up how they are today. If only Allen's and Bergmann's rules didn't apply (short limbs, high mass), it would be interesting to see how athletically 'superior' on average they might be due to their increased oxygen carrying capacity.

They reckon high altitude may have had something to do with this cricket game too since the record for the highest total in an innings was smashed by a significant margin, twice in the same game. The theory being the air is less dense than at sea level, allowing the ball to be hit further. I guess gravity may also be slightly less but I doubt by much. No idea if there is actually any scientific backing for these claims, may have just been a fluke.
