Hey guys,

I know I've seen this on here somewhere bu I can't seem to find it.

How do you go about calculating the thickness of your burst disc to go with your burst pressure rating?

Thanks.

Find a simplistic shear strength relationship for the thickness, diameter and pressure, then do some tests to approximate the effective shear strength in this situation. It ends up being linear, and is reasonably close in most cases. Due to the varying compositions and of aluminum foil, there will be at least some testing involved to generate useful numbers.

It's fairly easy to do some practical testing, if you need moar pressure, moar layers!

This might be of some help if the trial and error method doesn't appeal to you. :)

I have 40 Gauge copper sheets that I use as discs in my pneumatic HPA gun.

I have a 1/2" union, although the actual diameter of the disc that is open to air pressure is about 0.8" (I punch out 1 1/4" discs). They burst at 370-380 psi.
