personal computers in a machining environment

My graphics card already has a pretty good cooling system:



Instead of replacing it, decided to try and feed more cool air into the existing fan. Basically I mounted a spare 120mm fan to the side of the case over an existing vent, and constructed a basic duct out of polystyrene sheet and araldite, using a fan grille for attachment.

It's crude but seems to work pretty well, according to Catalyst Control Center the idle temperature has dropped from 46°C to 41°C .

Soooo... can I push it a bit harder?

why don't you use liquid cooling ? (ie. put the whole PC into an aquarium filled with mineral oil)

Wouldn't that solve all the problems ?


Though couldn't you move the computer to a different room (but keep the keyboard, screen etc. where it is) ?

The filter will help on the PSU intake though and isolating the PC to another room or the other side of wall will help immensely.

..or put all the components in an airtight box, and install a liquid cooling system. That way you can have a radiator outside your chamber.

There are some pretty funky setups out there, but:

WARNING: Submerging your hardware in mineral oil will void your warranty. Do this project only at your own risk. Puget Systems is not liable for any hardware problems, or damage to your personal property. Mineral oil is very difficult, if not impossible to clean from your components once they are submerged.

Don't really want to dunk brand new internals in oil...

I had misunderstood this, didn't figure you meant just move the tower and keep everything else.

Speedfan screenshot, is my CPU really that hot while idling or does it need to be configured? The individual core temperatures seem pretty ok...

Jack, you can try Real Temp for a second opinion on those temps...
Also, I am still on stock intel cooling and my CPU temp (see below) is lower then the 68C you are reading... (if speedfan is to be trusted)
so perhaps speedfan is a bit off with those temps? since all the individual cores are significantly lower than that...

Cheers, gave that a go and the core temperatures seem to match pretty well.

It's probably just configuration, not sure what that "AUX" field refers to either but it's always stuck at 92 degrees so I doubt it's a real reading.

'Cause it has so many other down sides, a really heavy PC, a weird smell in the room, a potential disaster if a leak occurs, a lot of work if a component needs changing, still requires fans on a radiator or otherwise a massive supply of oil and pumps, those ready made ones are expensive !

Some PSUs will supply the motherboard with its fan speed and temperature, could just be that the one you're using doesn't.

There is obviously something a little wrong with the sensor readouts, that CPU temperature is a bit high considering the core temperatures and also the massive cooler you're using, I have the same one on my cheapo Ebay parts PC, it is very effective.

The sandy bridge processors uses speed step to clock down when in idle but not down to 0 GHz... here you can see the difference in clock speeds on my sandy bridge when in idle mode and when not...

Yeah, even the late Pentium 4's did that to an extent, they basically just lower the multiplier on the fly.

All of this talk motivated me to get my good old breadboard PC out.

Not really dust proof...

I'll be getting a screen and a keyboard soon At the moment I'm having to use synergy and have it plugged into my housemate's TV.

I'd love to do something more innovative as a case but that's not a project for the near future. I like fans, but notthis much.
