Paintball Gun Questions

Ok, I'm thinking of making a paintball rifle, but I have a couple of questions.
1) Would it be possible to hook up a regulated Co2 or HPA tank directly to some sort of diaphragm or piston valve without the need for another air chamber? If I were to use a standard barrel sealing Tee design, the only thing that seems wrong is that it would have to be chamber filling versus behind-diaphragm fillling, so you'd need a spring. Also, once the diaphragm is open, you'd have a constant flow of air from the chamber, so would it get stuck open? Or woudl the air equalize around the diaphragm eventually and close it?
2) I heard 3/4" CPVC is the best size for paintballs, shouldnl't 3/4" regular PVC be the same? What's the difference?
3) If I wanted to use Co2, I'd have to use copper or steel pipe, correct?

2) cpvc is pvc in a size slightly smaller than copper. go to the ardware store and ask for a length of both, youll see what i mean.
3) youll want to use steel if the co2 is unregulated, you can use unregulated co2 in galvinized steel up to 1.5 inch, but that will come with a pricetag

Thanks. I usually buy my PVC stuff at Osh, I'm not sure if they have CPVC. Regular PVC seems to be pretty expensive over there too.

So I thought I could make some Tee valve out of a copper fitting and not have a copper air chamber at all, and use Co2. I'm not sure how a diaphragm would do in cold temperatures either...

Running a regulator directly to the main valve is a bad idea, unless you like bad performance. Regulators have extremely low flow, it would be like having a main valve with a 1/16" orifice.

Thats what I was thinking. You could remove the valve on teh co2 bottle and try to find a fitting that fits inside. Ah ok, thanks a lot. I was worried about that, so it seems like it won't work. I guess I'll just go with a HPA tank then. I don't want to have a long copper pipe running under my barrel. So unless I can find a lightweight metal air tank to use, I won't be able to use Co2 =\.

HPA is more expensive than CO<sub>2</sub> in the short term, but over the long run it is much cheaper to maintain and fill an HPA tank than a CO<sub>2</sub> tank. Many places I have seen so far, (mainly SCUBA shops and a little (african-ingenuity) foundry I went to), have an HP compressor hooked up to a cascade tank system that can fill your tank in half a second, for only a few cents, (or free).

Normal PVC is mesured in OD and cpvc is measured in ID.

Nominal Cpvc is by outter diameter. add 1/8" to the nominal size to get the outter diameter.
Sch 40 PVC is all fucked up size wise.
The PVC is 0.810 INCH ID
The CPVC is 0.690 INCH ID
The Paint Balls Are 0.68 INCH OD
The CPVC is your best choice.
OSH does carry it.
