Leading Causes of Death in the United States:

Total Number of Deaths: 2,403,351 = 100%

Cause of Death from Firearms 28,663 = 1.2% (all age grps ((>1yrs to 85yrs & unstated ages)) )

NOTE: Firearms Statistics Include: Gang Warfare, Self Defense Shootings and Criminals Killed by Police.

--

Leading Causes of Accidental Death in the United States:

Total Number of Deaths: 97,900 = 100%

Death from Accidental Discharge of Firearms: 776 = 0.8% (all age grps ((>1yrs to 85yrs & unstated ages)) )

NOTE: Accidental Firearms Statistics Include: Non-lethal and projectile-based equipment/toys/aids.

The last part would DEFINATLY fit in your speech for raw data... I added the "true" firearms section for comparison.

Hope it helps!

Spudguns are not considered firearms in the U.S. so those statistics do not count.

The injuries involved with spudguns are generally from bad use or wrong material choice such as thinwall or DWV.

There has been ONE death from these and it was by total fluke. The man was hit in the chest with a part of his gun at just the right moment to throw his heart out of rhythm.

One that I know of from using a spudgun the way it was supposed to be used, and that is the man sgort said.

Although I remember hearing of screwdriver boy that that shot himself in the chest with a screwdriver, but I never saw the article and I'm not sure if he died.

There are quite a few instances of people trying to use stronger fuels like gun powder that have lead to deaths, I can't remember a number on how many though.

Edit: and the any kind of homemade weapon thing is pretty broad. I would imagine the IED devices we hear about in Iraq would classify as a homemade weapon, so if you concider things like that then the number is probably fairly large.
