if you put that in a balloon, then tie a wick to it and let it go, it will blow up in midair!

ask djt about this i do believe he did some kind of science project on it...trae08 wrote:anyone have any plans or a working machine they wouldn't mind sharing? i've made a simple one with a 9 volt battery an salt an a graphite rod. but i am looking for one a li'l more complicated that will yield more gas (hydrogen gas)

Bicarbonate of soda is a good alternative to using salt, and its cheap and easy to find.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.

Well, when you guys where studying science, i was working on the cars to drive you there. So to speak. I've deffently heard of eletroplateing, (chrome plateing), i've shined my share of it allrite! Thanks for the discriptions. The diagram really helped, (Killjoy).
One more question -- Who invented the Elotrolysis machine? A guy named Hairless Electrolow??? (jk) No need to answer.

One thing though, DON'T use a stun gun or something like that. Actually, don't use anything much over 18 volts. (Like a drill battery)((As long as it doesn't overheat)) A stungun or compacitor will create massive sparks, and it will heat the water very, very, very fast. Now, obviously, depending on whether you modded it or not, it can only shock for so long. But, you will shock the water a few times, then after that, all of a sudden, BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It blows up because the sparks ignited the gasses. *dead* You might be able to pull it off if the electrodes were far enough from each other, but I don't recommend it.
Oh, and more amps is probably what would make it go faster, HOWEVER, more amps potentially make it MUCH more dangerous to you. And I wouldn't recommend going above about 5. (A nice RC battery.)
(I.E. a stungun only has about 2-3 amps, but 20k-40k volts, that is why it doesn't kill you.)
Oh, and another thing, I wouldn't recommend using an electrolyte at all, because it will only put stuff in your oxygen side. (If you want it.) And, it will only make things more complicated, as it will collect on the electrodes, making a mess, and you will have to clean or replace them,,,,,,, (Using an electrolyte seriously speeds deteioration time on the electrodes.) Just increase the amps, (not too much) see above in my post about amps. Its much cleaner this way.

Stun guns should not be used, but that's because they cannot handle extended use and because its low current capacity is very low. 2-3 amperes is not its draw. By the way, it takes a mere 20 milliamps to kill a human if you get them across the heart.
Just because something is high current, it doesn't mean it will blow up. The current will be the same whether you use 8 AAAs or one 12v gell cell. The water is at a fixed resistance which you can not change. The only thing that is different between the two power sources is that they will have different times at which they will die. V=IR; Voltage = Current x Resistance. You CAN NOT change that.
Next, the gasses would never explode. Do you know what would happen? Tiny little combustions would happen in the form of a fizz.
Also, about the electrolyte, does it matter what he uses if he is just collecting the hydrogen? No.
And SpudBlaster took care of the rest of the humiliation you need:
Yeah, most people don't know it, but pure water is one of the worst conductors. I laugh when people insist otherwise.SpudBlaster15 wrote:An electrolyte must be present, or the water will not conduct the current. Fortunatley, tap water often contains an array of dissolved salts that allow it to conduct electricity, so if you are using that, you dont have to add anything.

There some electrolytes that are not consumed during electrolysis, I believe sodium hydroxide is one.
I would suggest not to use a battery of any sort, some kind of power supply such as a cheap computer power source would work good. Its just that the battery will be drained quite quickly.
Cannon Feak.
